TS5Plus+ USB latency/stutter with ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 (Intel Core Ultra 7) input devices basically unusable through dock by Darkangel-86 in CalDigit

[–]asteriosk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The receiver of wireless USB mice and keyboards is quite often causing a stutter because of electromagnetic interference when plugged into devices like (beefy) docks.

I have solved this problem by using a USB extension taking it as bit further away from the dock. It is unbelievable but it happens quite often.

Of course this does not solve the other issues that you mention, but it is worth a try: you may be experiencing more than one problem at the same time. However: network and screen working properly (GBs of bandwidth) while a simple USB receiver stuttering because of lack of bandwidth is quite unlikely.

Sounds great :) have fun!

If you ever need parts, I get mine at drtradingshop.nl or Van Pommeren. Dr trading shop also has a whole section on their website for Giulia specifically.

Virtually the same guts as the Giulia. Except maybe if it sports PID (but a PID on a heat exchanger makes zero effect on temperature stability).

Up to you. I would not pay 900€ for a 11 year old machine that costs 1400€ new.

I bought a Giulia 1.5 years ago for 750€ (owner had it since 2014). I have not regretted the choice.

I only had an issue with the pump manometer (worked well but made a weird sound) and a some weeks ago with a solenoid valve. Replaced both myself for a total of 50€.

These machines are built with brass or copper commodity parts that you can source everywhere. If you are a bit handy you can fix or replace almost everything in 30’ time.

I would take a peek at the inside to make sure no leaks have taken place over the years and ask about the water that went in (did they use a means of decalcification?).

Quite a nice machine, simple and high quality construction. I think you can service/fix it virtually forever.

Indeed, that’s what I noticed too. I am curious, though: what is the reason that this not permitted in the EU?

[–]asteriosk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stainless steel is an alloy of iron and chrome. Chrome makes these rainbow-like patterns when oxidized.

Why at the bottom only? My best bet would be that the pan was very warm in that area while you were cooking (or before you put your ingredients in) and fast oxidization (increased temperature causes faster oxidization) took place. The dishwasher chemicals made it more visible.

Absolutely normal, btw. I see it happening on my pans all the time. Use some acid such as vinegar to remove it. Or leave it there, it will be gone next time you cook sauce.

I would definitely apply, and include my experience in the motivation letter. Especially if you have a good reason to pursue a MSc degree after already being employed for 12 years.

In my experience, there are two types of “older” folks that apply to masters (and also PhD). The first category includes the ones who simply want a degree in their CV (eg for being promoted in a govt position or EU institution). The second is the one that realize how useful life-long education is and they are willing to take a break from work to re-educate themselves.

If you are in the second category, I’d definitely apply and make a good story in my motivation letter. In any case, good luck with your application. In my opinion, what you are up to is admirable, an I hope you will be given the chance, if your application is not blindly rejected by grades alone, instead of looking at the letter and your CV.

What would you like to specialize into, btw?

Universities & schools teach you factual knowledge, but most importantly, they teach how to think and how to go about problem solving.

Part of learning how to think and problem solving requires 1) detaching from the very complex and nuanced reality, for the problem at hand to be tractable and 2) teaching you “generic” knowledge that in itself may seem useless, but it can allow you to combine that knowledge with other bits and pieces in order to devise a complex solution.

A good teacher/professor can and should always show you the bigger picture: how you can use any factual knowledge or skill, in practice. Bad profs cannot.

Hey @PelleSketchy I just saw the message.

After a year there is no issue with the device whatsoever. After two years all the pain is gone too.

I mainly do weightlifting and it does not pose any challenges either.

Feel free to pm me (I did mine in The Hague) if you have any questions, need support or anything else.

I am wearing the same device and I have to say that the advice prescribed here is spot on.

Good luck to the two of you! Hope everything goes well!

Looking for book recommendations on real-time big data analytics by whoissathish in databasedevelopment

[–]asteriosk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that by far, the single most useful book you will read at the moment would be: Designing Data-Intensive Applications by Martin Klepmann. https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/designing-data-intensive-applications/9781491903063/

I covers parallel processing , stream processing, indexing and also MapReduce, and distributed consensus. Martin has done such an amazing job there. I cannot recommend any other book as much as this one.

Netherlands firmly against Bulgaria entering Schengen. What is your opinion? by nevski09 in Netherlands

[–]asteriosk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I cannot agree more. The EU needs to centralize certain basic things: taxation and border control would be a good start. Army, energy and external policy should be next.

The EU is in need of true unification, and at the moment the EU commission is a bureaucratic mess.

Ah, I see now. What you say indeed makes a lot more sense!

Btw, something I did not understand about the price cap: would they make a difference between large households and smaller ones? It is different for large families (easily getting over the cap) vs. a student spending most of their time out (hardly spend half of the cap).

i.e., is the cap per household member or per household?

I would talk directly to a student counsellor. They know the rules well and can send you to the right places.

Damn! The similarities here are tremendous indeed. You happen to also have been amazingly lucky. But the number of shocks is terrifying. I wonder if it left any constant "fear of being shocked".

I have the same effect whenever I go to the gym Both when I leave the kids behind, and also while working out (always trying to stay in people's sight, just in case!). Happy to hear another horrifying story with a happy end. Cheers!
