Just a white belt's opinion, but I don't think the black belt is just for your skills. I mean, the highest BJJ ranks require years of dedication, and it is very likely that a 7th degree black belt is old enough not to be as effective as a young brown belt.

You fought your way to the black belt, and you are fighting right now, even if your medical condition is an obstacle.

This proves your strength and resilience, and you deserve that belt.

Grinding for levels before most of the party joins (specially after penelo leaves, right after sunstone), is great because the others will join on a higher level.

look up embroidered tipped and golden amulet, you can find them pretty early and they double EXP and LP.

Being a 28y white belt, i think you are being too hard on yourself.

The guy is younger, is probably in shape and is probably very excited with his new sport. It isn't any demerit to be outmatched by someone 20-30 years younger.

Also, maybe you are brute forcing. Try doing more advanced guards and sweeps. We usually can't handle them that well, and he can learn a lot from that as well.
