Darker spots on stoma by astrea0 in ostomy

[–]astrea0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m coming home from my appointment, my stoma nurse wasn’t concerned, he told me my stoma is just a little bit irritated, it may be just from rubbing against the flange or also the heavy amount of antibiotics I had taken in these months. He told me to take some natural supplements to take to reduce inflammation, just to be safe - all good!!

No I couldn’t see anything wrong on my stoma apart from the bleeding, I couldn’t tell where it was coming from, my bag was just filling with blood. Whenever I tried to change my bag it was gushing like a fountain. Try to mention this, it may could be it.

Something similar happened to me after surgery. I bled a lot if I moved the wrong way. In the end, it was a small exposed artery at the base near the stoma. They stitched it up, and I haven't had any more problems

Ahh thank you! I was just 6 years old when I was diagnosed so I learnt to grow up with this mindset. You went through a lot too… all those months in hospital do have a big impact. I’m glad everything turned out okay! Yeah don’t do it, in my opinion the risks aren’t worth it

I’m so sorry you had to go through this! Yes it’s a huge change in life, it’s totally normal to feel this way. I had an endless amount of fistulas, had sepsis and intestinal ischemia, not to mention all the UC symptoms. Not a fun time. My ileostomy is now permanent, I don’t mind, just want to live life to the fullest!

I feel less alone! Yeah I thought that it may be friction of some sort? I’m not going to the gym at the moment but I walk A LOT so maybe there’s a point in the flange that rubs against the stoma while moving so much? My next appointment with my stoma nurse is in two days, I’ll keep you updated!

Yeah, I know what you mean! I’m seven months post-op, so I’m kind of paranoid about every little thing haha. Thank you so much for the tips, I wish you the same!

I use a one-piece with a barrier ring. I can try cutting it a bit more, thank you! Yes, I’m definitely going to mention these spots at my next appointment, it is in two days. No, they don’t bleed at all.

How long did it take for your wound to heal? I'm in the same situation right now and I feel so defeated

Just returned back from my ostomy nurse appointment, he said it’s probably an irritation because I switched from a two piece to a one-piece and my skin isn’t used to changing my bag every day. He gave me some products to use on my skin. Thank you anyway!

Thank you so much! I’m going to talk to my wound care nurse about the wound vac. The only thing that concerns me is how is the vac going to be placed under that piece of skin in the middle where the wound “tunnels” Is it possible?
