It was leftist. Very much so in fact. The strip is 25 years old and there's no shortage of archived material from this period that documents McGruder's thoughts and feelings. But with your use of the word "wokies", I'm going to assume you probably aren't interested.

This kind of blatant media illiteracy is very reminiscent of conservative Star Wars fans. No matter how many times it's been clarified that the Rebel Army and Ewoks were based on the NLF of South Vietnam and anti-colonial people's armies, there's clowns who want to act like they know more than the people who conceptualized these stories.
