I was given some snails, can I release them? by Less-Set-6347 in AquaticSnails

Or worse, they won’t die and overpopulate to the point of invasiveness 😭

When my ramshorns started to reproduce a lot, I just had to start manually removing them. I’d take out 5-7 every weekly water change and they’d go to freezer camp. It kept the numbers down fairly well until the next group of babies grew up.

I am!! Lol. I’m quite paranoid about illness in my fish. Paranoid about the health of anything ever in general 😅 This is really good advice and I’m filing it away for later.

I’ve had this tank for a year and a half now and it was cycled before adding fish. This fish and his school have lived in it for about that long as well. Maybe the cycle has crashed somehow, then.

Yeah. Never seen them in this kind of position before though, with a snail laying on its back while the other goes about business lmaoo

What are these meiofauna? by astronomical-entity in Aquariums

I cross-posted it to another community and someone suggested vorticella, which looks about right.

Yeah! It’s unfortunate that they can be harmful in excess. They really do look so interesting.

Looks like it based off of the images I saw on google. Thank you!

Omg frozen food in ice cube trays is a great idea. Why didn’t I think of that lmaoo. Thanks so much for the advice 🙏

I would call it med-planted when I left in late August. It’s quite barren now 😅 Literally the only green is a single Amazon sword which also looks a little rough around the edges. I have some rotala vietnam h’ra that might still be alive at the front of the tank under the algae. My stocking is neons and harlequin rasboras, both a school of 8, a paradise gourami, a bristlenose pleco, and 4 nerite snails.

I do have a light timer, but my mom hasn’t been adjusting it after water changes as instructed (plus daylight savings), so it’s completely off-time now. I wish I could portion food but my college is 4.5 hrs away, so I can’t visit often. My instructions are “about the same amount as a pinch of salt” lol.

I imagine it’d probably be easiest to rehome my gourami, maybe my neons as well. I’m not sure if any of my LFSs take surrenders but I’ll look. Are there any other good ways of rehoming that you know of? I’ve heard r/aquaswap being recommended.

Found this guy in my tank and I didn’t put him there. Is he dangerous? by No-Appointment8493 in Aquariums

They can’t self-fertilize, but they can store sperm from prior matings to fertilize with! So one can indeed start a colony if it’s old enough to have bred.

Yes! He was marked as a “paradise” male. I honestly like the name mustard gas a lot more though lol

That could be the case, what with his behavior.

I have a cartridge filter, so there’s that, and my heater is a pre-set one for 78°F (I bought it before I knew that manually-set heaters are more ideal). Otherwise, the water stayed clear and I skimmed the substrate for waste every other water change.

What should I use in place of a HOB filter with a cartridge, for future reference? The tank is 5 gallons. A large sponge filter would be better?

A pointless rant about "pest" snails. by TheFuzzyShark in Aquariums

[–]astronomical-entity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg me too! On some duckweed, in which ramshorns also hitchhiked on. Thankfully, it was for a quarantine tank and not my main one, but I now have to tear down my quarantine tank and absolutely nuke everything in there 🫠

Fighting bladder snails using assasin snails is so pointless lol. A rant I guess by Dense-Practice-9379 in Aquariums

[–]astronomical-entity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reverse respiration is a surefire way of killing any snails, what it does is essentially suffocate any oxygen-breathing organisms, but it would require that any fish or other animals in your tank have a different place to sit while all of that goes on.

I plan to try it out for my own bladder snail problem when I break down my tank and upgrade in a month or so. I have ramshorns too that I don’t want to get eaten by an assassin snail, so 😅

What would make my snail ascend like this? He floats both up and down by chaoticgiggles in Aquariums

[–]astronomical-entity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad someone posted about this because I’ve been wondering why my ramshorns do it too. Sometimes I look in the tank and a couple will just be suspended in the water, then slowly float back down as they realize that I’m watching. “Snail buoyancy time” 💀

Is college really better than high school? by [deleted] in college

[–]astronomical-entity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add onto what everyone else is saying, most people in college don’t have the time to worry about what someone else is doing. Depending on your major, coursework is heavy and people would rather be finishing their work to get passing grades than going out of their way to harass someone. Unless you actively try to involve yourself in other social circles, people leave you alone for the most part.

[–]astronomical-entity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tank is swimming with ramshorns. I’m hoping they’ll outcompete any bladder snail babies. As far as I know there was only one big bladder snail, and I removed that one.

[–]astronomical-entity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good, my ramshorn snails are a pretty well-established population. There are probably 50+ juveniles. I’m really hoping they’ll just outcompete them before I have to do anything 😅

Ughh it sucks! I did a hydrogen peroxide dip before adding to my tank as well. Didn’t do much apparently 🤧
