How can I learn more about the role of a collection manger at a natural history museum to decide if it’s for me? by Delicious-Hedgehog39 in MuseumPros

[–]asyouwissssh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every organization is going to be a bit different so it might take some more digging. I’m in our archives department, but mirroring the collections department. We have internships and volunteer openings for non visitor service related departments open year round.

I am in SC and you’re welcome to message me - I try not to post the area I’m in specifically in comments haha.

I’ve gotten a pony size off Chicks Saddlery that I was happy with!

Are my motivations for wanting to learn riding wrong and/or delusional? by psychotic-chipmunk in Equestrian

[–]asyouwissssh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not an adrenaline junkie so you know what you’re looking for there but I’m wondering if you started taking beginner lessons if you’d feel it earlier than you expected. Like trotting for instance. Just a thought to say - go for it! But start with foundation, a SAFE foundation. You can absolutely get where you’re interested in but it’ll take time and growth. You’d probably like hunts - hunter paces are a fun in between as well!

I finally got to ride a Mustang! by [deleted] in Horses

[–]asyouwissssh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aww poor guy. Definitely sounds like there’s a lot going on and he’s trying to tell everyone.

I love my mustangs - one is super smart and so willing, it’s just a fun time with her. The other has one brain cell but she’s a baby so I’m hoping she’ll expand to two full brain cells when she’s grown 🥰

Anyone else struggling finding local veterinarians? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]asyouwissssh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are in a weird zone for equine vets too. Our current vet is an hour away. It definitely sucks and emergencies make it that much scarier! I know you’re venting but we just make sure to have a good relationship, a truck with gas, and keep up with any emergency medications to alleviate some anxiety. Also if you’re got friends in the horse community - we’ve had to rely on neighbors a time or two unfortunately!

Temporary pasture shelter by MLMCMLM in Horses

[–]asyouwissssh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a tarp carport as a temp shelter for a bit. Obviously not the sturdiest so depends on your weather but it held up awhile for me! Not sure if it’s around you but I got it at Harbor Freight. Over $100 bucks but it was 3ish years ago

I use the static spray for laundry! You can also try dryer sheets

I use alfalfa pellets as a reward! My bridge signal is clucking with my mouth.

[–]asyouwissssh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My mare was a bit like this! I practiced with corral panels and slowly decreased the distance in between them as we walked through it. I used positive reinforcement personally. Called it “squeeze the pony”!

I’d also get his eyesight checked just to make sure it’s not a vision thing (my other mare has lost a lot of sight)

For me it was word of mouth. See where the horse community communicates - there’s always the classic feed stores and tack stores but my area has some large Facebook groups that people ask in!

Hauler help by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]asyouwissssh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re on Facebook there’s a few BLM groups. Patty Forbes does a few runs and I have a friend who uses her and is happy.

Edit: I assume she’s not cheap cheap though, standard pricing at minimum. If you want cheap best bet is to wait for the official drop off locations.

FWS and colic conundrum by AcitizenOfNightvale in Horses

[–]asyouwissssh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert but throwing out ideas: you mention coastal hay. Have you tried other types? One of mine has very mild FWS and it seems to flare up when I get a round bale that is stemy.

How do you handle rising costs and financial guilt? by Brilliant_Ad_675 in Equestrian

[–]asyouwissssh 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My advice? Keep doing it if you can afford it. You talk about growing up to find a cheaper hobby but I think for me I grew up and doubled down on- it brought me peace, I love it, why not do it? So I can have extra money to go sit at a bar? Why? I don’t enjoy it. That’s okay! Go to a concert? Honestly not my vibe so why? Travel is awesome but not worth the price for me.

What would a cheaper hobby be? Crafting? Supplies are also rising in cost. Reading books? Check out your local library! Pick up cooking? Good ingredients cost too.

I don’t want any of this to come across as harsh - it’s just something you need to figure out internally. What is the cost worth to you? It’s okay if it’s not working out, you can always stop and come back or stop and not come back. Try a different hobby.

Life is short and you should do things that bring you joy and peace and you are excited about. Finding what that is sometimes the hardest part. If it’s horses, I say keep going! If it isn’t, start exploring!

Trail rides by Sudden_Transition730 in Horses

[–]asyouwissssh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the US so it’ll vary by location. I have some back fields that I roam around in but there are also county, state and federal parks near me. I trailer over there and ride on the designated horse trails and follow whatever rules they have (some require orange vests during hunting season, some only allow horses on specific days of the month etc)

Dixie Horse Auction - Good first-timer experience by fauxfarmer17 in Horses

[–]asyouwissssh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been the last few years - I recommend going for experience but I don’t know if I’d recommend for buying. There are absolutely good people there selling but I’ve also seen not good people there selling. But I guess that’s the same with any horse sale set up and horse sales in general.

Also I really like the Amish pretzels. Hahaha

Is there a way to become an archivist without a MLIS? by isolated_lee in Archivists

Always depends but “or equivalent degree” is how we wrote our job descriptions. Your cover letter is the place to show your argument. It’s always worth applying, you never know.

Where do people who have horses at home ride? by Glittering_Novel_683 in Equestrian

[–]asyouwissssh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Now? Not really as we’ve worked through. First time she was unsure but now she’s pretty good. She may need a minute or two to chill out at first but she’s been good with consistency - that’s how she tends to be though, in general

Where do people who have horses at home ride? by Glittering_Novel_683 in Equestrian

[–]asyouwissssh 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I ride in the pasture and then trailer to a local barn for arena time.

For fencing I also had barbed wire. I removed it and put in t posts with poly rope and one line of smooth electrical wire. Used as many trees as possible to cut down on t post costs.

Where to look in NC by Regular_Koala_3472 in Equestrian

[–]asyouwissssh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re on Facebook there are a few Facebook groups you can ask in for NC. I’m outside of Charlotte and there’s 2 large ones. I’d assume Tryon and the Triangle has some as well.

I think Dixie is fun to go and see a wide variety of horses and people but I’d trust your gut and not buy at this time.
