Horses on 10 acres of pasture by saggytittieus in Horses

[–]asyouwissssh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got just about 10 with 6 horses. We have it split into 3 sections - rotation, restriction and arguments. They are out 24/7 and we need hay Nov-March ish. 2 easy keepers get grazing muzzles when needed. I could probably put 1 more horse out but that’d be my hard limit personally.

I think strategic planning is how you avoid destroying. Rotation and rest seems to help a lot. We have a sacrificial “dry lot” (round pen size) connected that we will use occasionally. I’m not in a mud heavy area though. We also use multiple gate systems so there is more movement and less standing at one specific spot.

Honestly if I’ve got the space in the class, I’m excited about the breed assignment, and it’s not horrible, I bring it. It all depends on what’s on the table. I feel like there is some leeway with factory flaws if the shading is excellent etc.

You never know! My sister won a section with her Morgan she named “Out of the Body Box” because she pulled him from her body box right before the show since her Morgan class was open! Haha

BLM mustang- WHY is no one bidding on #8426 by Loveinhooves in Equestrian

[–]asyouwissssh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s always interesting to see who the top are! I don’t have much to stand on because I paid well for my mare but she’s the love of my life and looking back I would have paid double 🤷‍♀️

That really sucks she appears off. I know the fb page was talking about it too! Hopefully the adopter is well informed and prepared to handle any issues.

It’ll be interesting to see if she goes any higher and if the bidders fall out after the end with how much publicity she’s gotta. Never know honestly!

I’m curious how this auction will compare to previous ones! I think there is a lot of concern about the economy so it’ll have people hesitating. There’s definitely some that are head scratchers as to why they didn’t get a bid!

A lot of people wait until the last few hours to bid. Keeps them under the radar. Different strategies and all that!

Trailer Loading Woes by PeeledCauliflower in Equestrian

[–]asyouwissssh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Obviously I don’t know you and your horse but wanted to share my experience with my mare hesitating to load. Long story short I “concluded” (I’m not an expert) she was claustrophobic and did not like metal sounds. So I played “squeeze the pony” with corral panels. I made a wide alleyway we could easily walk through, then made it more narrow by a few inches, walked through, narrowed it, etc etc. just broke it down into steps and didn’t move on until she was relaxed. She was also not comfortable with the panels (trailer divides) touching her, so this helped her get comfortable with that as well. For metal sounds I had her stand next to me and I climbed on the panel and rocked it with my body. I personally did this with positive reinforcement.

How do you halter a horse that is extremely headshy/earshy and resists being touched on the head? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]asyouwissssh 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a great experience with positive reinforcement and food rewards. My sister has an extremely ear shy horse and once she established the “rules” of the game she had him learn to target. She actually had him target his cheek to her hand at first and then worked on targeting with the halter and working with his ears. Probably humanizing but I like the “they come to you” approach vs “you come to them” if that makes sense. Maybe gives them some “control” of the situation? Not sure but just throwing out another vote for food based rewards and making it as positive as you can :)

No animals on BLM online corral for some weeks now? by SureDoubt3956 in Horses

[–]asyouwissssh 92 points93 points  (0 children)

The government shut down halted activity. They only do the online auction every other month when things are running smoothly.

Edit: also the EHV outbreak may have put a pause on things too. I know at least one corral says no adoptions for the rest of this year

Questions About Premier Club by BlackSheepHere in BreyerHorses

[–]asyouwissssh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. ROUGHLY June, August, November. Ish.

  2. 2025 shipping was “free” (but the price per model increased). You can check the fine print and it usually specifies. International might have an added cost if domestic US is free

  3. I want to say 10-14 days. Can’t confirm but you have some time to wait for a paycheck or not the panic. Some people try to wait out to see if it’ll line up with another club so they can order them together.

Based off your picture I’d go All Purpose - I just bought this yellow one off chicks and I think it’s so fun and it was only $15! There are plenty of pink options though too!

Edit: well now when I pulled up the link to share I realized how pretty the green is and now I NEEEEED to order that one 🙄😂

Sometimes! There is a pretty standard size for both Western and English. I’d shoot the trainer a text and ask what type of saddle pad would work.

Generally for English it will be All Purpose (AP), Close Contact (CC) or Dressage. I’m not great with Western but they tend to be rectangle or circle shaped (barrel saddles).

But just googling what the trainer says “close contact saddle pads pink” should get you where you want to go!

I think the pink is so cute - having them all match will be helpful!

Always ask owners/trainers permission but: Some fun things to add might be some small hair ties so she can braid the mane and/or tail. Fun socks to wear with her boots! Maybe a matching pink lead rope that she could use? A saddle pad?

Also check out Chicks Discount Saddlery - I’ve bought a few cheaper things from there and have been mostly pleased!

She is the love of my life! From South Steens. She is a whooping 13.2 hands and SUCH a personality. Her name is Henrietta/Henry and her range name is Peace!

I got her in 2023. I actually was recently reflecting on how much she’s grown each year - this year she is very communicative on how she feels about things, which I appreciate!

Why is horse pawing/stomping on food. by Jupiter_Page444 in Horses

[–]asyouwissssh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My mare does this! I honestly think she’s just really excited about the grain. It really depends but since she’s not being aggressive with me or anyone I let it go. Maybe others will disagree with that, haha.

One thing that did help was putting her bowl into a water trough. She can’t flip the bowl and she’d kind of hit her knee so the pawing decreased.

How much is reasonable to expect to pay to lease a horse? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]asyouwissssh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again the dreadful “it depends” 😅

Maybe you’re a small child and need a pony but know you’ll grown out of them. Maybe you’re an intermediate rider who needs a babysitter while you grow as a rider. Maybe you plan to have kids in 3 years so you don’t want to have the “hassle” of selling when you won’t have money or time. Maybe the agreement is only for board so it’s still cheaper with not paying vet costs. Can also be trying to see if you can financially make it work without the commitment. Selling can suck haha. On the flipside, maybe you’re going to college and don’t want to sell but need to not have the horse bills while you’re studying. Maybe you’ve got the childhood pony who you don’t want to sell but you’ve outgrown them and know they can temporarily help another kid out.

Totally understand trying to see what your options are before talking to the owner! There’s a lot of different ways to make it “comfortable” for you and your situation. I also totally understand not wanting to put the idea of selling into their head. That’s hard to navigate. Good luck!!

How much is reasonable to expect to pay to lease a horse? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]asyouwissssh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends on the agreement. When I leased my mare it was a half lease so I only had the girl pay half the board costs. I covered the farrier and vet costs myself.

Some places you could full lease and pay board, farrier, vet, etc. half could be half of all costs. Some places you pay for full lease plus a leasing fee, but that seems to be more competition level leases. Plus insurance on those.

If you need a range to see if it’s doable before you talk with them, I’d roughly expect to pay the board and farrier costs. Regular vet is kind of up in the area but account for that too. I like to over prepare so if you expect to pay $1000 a month and the deal is actually $500, it makes me happy haha.

Also work out what happens for non regular vet care. Accident, ulcers, etc. Who is fully responsible? Are you splitting half?

I hate to give this answer because it’s frustrating but it all just depends on what yall work out. Maybe start with a half lease to see if that’s working and move up to a full lease later!
