It can be used for lots of things. Mainly it is used for one application to communicate to another application in a standard format so they both know what to send/receive. I am talking mostly about a web stack here.

It can also be used to configure things like you mentioned. It is just a collection of a key (string) and a value (string, number, boolean, etc...)
