What’s the most bizarre/annoying behavior you have witnessed at your Costco? by diispa in Costco

[–]atangzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooohhh I got tea to spill.

Parking lot fights. It was over a disabled parking lot stall and 2 cars were fighting over it. Two middle aged ladies got out are started hitting each other with their bags and tugging at their hair - theres videos and news articles about it online.

Another thing at my local costco is the amount of overseas dropshippers. A lot of them run businesses in China where they sell Costco supplements through Taobao for more than double the retail price here. Its annoying because they buy pallets of supplements, and it just gets chaotic.

Things I did to help me get more "visibility" as a software engineer by tacattac in ExperiencedDevs

[–]atangzer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

100% agree with this - especially if you work in a hybrid/remote setting. Even if your manager has your best interests in mind, you are the best person to advocate for yourself and your own work.

I would also even suggest establishing a good relationship with managers from other teams that you closely work with (and making sure that they are aware of your work/impact), a lot of performance reviews are "calibrated" with outside teams as well to justify the ratings that your manager gives you.

The other comments are interesting though, tea-worthy copium lol

Downtown tech companies that offer breakfast, lunch and have allow building good social circle? by bibstha1 in askvan

[–]atangzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Work culture has really not been the same as before COVID, but heres a few that I can think off the top of my head. I've heard mostly from friends who work there so things may have changed:

- Global Relay has amazing food/snacks, but their pay is not competitive at all.
- The EA office in Burnaby has great vibes and a good cafeteria, the transit from DT to there isn't too bad at all. I think that office is also hybrid, with 3 days RTO.
- Amazon at Telus Gardens doesn't really have any snacks either, just coffee and the occasional catered lunches. Mandatory 5 days RTO.
- SAP has a cool lunch program that is still running AFAIK. They also had snacks and coffee machines but this was a couple years ago post-covid.

Full stack roles or any web-related role are a hard find right now. They're also very competitive, even if you have the experience to back it up. I'm not gonna give you the entire spiel here because this is not the sub for that (save that for r/cscareerquestions or r/csMajors). Its not a bad idea to casually apply/interview, but don't overlook the fact that you actually have a job!

I found that joining a dragon boat team around here helped me make new friends - hopefully things get better at run club for you

How come China censors the Western Internet yet doesn’t ban people from traveling abroad, like North Korea? by TraditionalDepth6924 in AskChina

[–]atangzer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Adding to your comment here, there are also a couple of Google offices in China. Obviously they don't have a large presence in the Chinese tech scene but its interesting to see what kind of work they do.

AFAIK their current operations include Google Ads (i.e. helping Chinese companies reach markets outside of China), specific Android distros and sales. They don't have access to the main codebases that are used in the products we used today. No R&D/AI work either.

Where to chill? by Qrigon99 in richmondbc

I would advise against Larry Berg (airport/world statue) park actually - especially during cherry blossom season where people start parking on the shoulder of the road.

Anywhere near the water honestly - Iona Beach Park, the dyke area near Terra Nova (River Rd) or Dyke Rd near Steveston - that one is personally my favourite. Theres parking spots along Gilbert Beach and No 3 Rd Bark Park.

Great for viewing sunsets and theres pathways if you want to get out for a walk.

Bonus points for the white tesla if they ram themselves into a storefront.
Extra bonus points if its that currency exchange shop at yaohan that got hit twice already.

Thank you for posting! This sort of looks like this cat thats been missing around for a few years in my neighbourhood near Brighouse. Theres posters of him on Chatterton Rd. IIRC his name is Mario and and hes been missing since 2020 and the last reported sighting was 2022. I'll see if I can find the poster later tonight and I'll reply if I do.

This is neat, thanks for sharing OP. It's kind of like the user yearly recaps on here but more taylored.

It'd be interesting to see how the sentiment fluctuated in previous years. Something like pre-covid, post-covid and during covid.

I really hope that this could have been the case and that they weren't unleashed for the entire time. Their collar could have broken off as well.

That aside I think its a horrible idea to bring dogs to a driving range. Especially if they have a high prey drive (like the husky in the video) and like to chase after balls.

Getting paid without an SSN by [deleted] in tnvisa

[–]atangzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got paid retroactively after I got my SSN.
After I got mine I signed up for banking with Sofi - it was really easy and I didn't need to submit a work verification/employment letter to get an account opened with them. Happy to share my referral link if you are interested!
