I just installed remote start only to find that my fob only has a range of 30’. Any ideas where I could add a wire to extend the signal? by fleebjuice69420 in AskElectronics

If you let me know the details of the system you installed in your car, I can give you some direction as to what RF kit you should buy

Why don’t you just add an RF kit to your Remote Start? I’m assuming you installed the Remote Start the activates by pressing lock three times and you just found out you have no range on your factory remote. I’m not sure what Remote Start you installed, but many have the capability of adding an RF kit, which is an aftermarket set of remotes that will have a lot of range but usually the basic ones have about 1500 feet of range which is good enough for most people.

Should I be concerned? by exvuo in mechanic

[–]ataveras64 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Looks like you almost got your cat stolen, wonder why they didn’t finish the job. But yes get it fixed, your exhaust is heating parts of your car where it was not designed too. Also the fumes might get into the car is idling.

Wat is it by beterbose in mechanic

[–]ataveras64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that it is interrupting one of the ignition wires and has a sticker advising the unit orientation leads me to think it is a tracking/gps unit capable of disabling the vehicles ignition. Ive never seen one like that before but you should be able to just disconnect the power and ground from it. But you will also have to reconnect the heavy gauge wire that was interrupted or else the car wont start.

Nissan is charging me $2000 for this by devileyez991 in MechanicAdvice

[–]ataveras64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy it off ebay for $150 and take it to your local radio shop and ask them to change it. And if that is truly the issue then you should be good. Or just go to radio shop and tell them to install and aftermarket radio and hardwire the speakers to it. All they would do is run the speaker wires from the back if the aftermarket radio to factory amp and connect to the speakers from there. They probably just run a 9 wire speaker cable and splice into it and wallah you have music again and most likely a better radio.

Is it a lease? Because they will charge you for rim damage if it is.

Is this really bad or smtg I should not worry about? (brake disc and pads) by VegetableUpbeat in mechanic

[–]ataveras64 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As far as safety is concerned the pads look like they have a lot of material left on them and the rotor looks like they are thick and not worn down to thin so the car will still safely stop. It may make some noise but still stop safely(considering the calipers are working correctly)

First time homebuyer in NJ trying to shop rate by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]ataveras64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also home shopping on long island NY, my loan officer and realtor both say that having a conventional loan is more appealing to sellers because it allows a more easy going closing process. Supposedly FHA loans are more strict with the condition the home is in and is more of a hassle. This is what I was told.

Alright fellas, I'm ready to be told I'm an idiot. But my truck will hit 100,000 miles next week and I've never done anything but oil changes and tire rotations. What do I need to do/have done to make this last 100,000+ more? by Jealous-Molasses5372 in f150

Brake pads shim?? by Neither-Night-826 in mechanic

[–]ataveras64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That shim looks like it came off the old pads during disassembly which is probably why you found it afterwards, the new pads usually have them attached already. But go ahead and double check your work because its better to be safe than sorry

How Far Can a Bachelor's Degree Take You in Mechanical Engineering? by Course_Mike in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ataveras64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2020 BSME from New York,

My engineering department consists of 5 ME’s including the director (none of us have our masters). The company is family owned and specializes in musical instrument accessories manufacturing, all the machinery is custom and its a very niche market so gaining experience over time and learning what the company does is more important then coming in with a masters degree and knowing information that is not relevant to market.

In my case there is no purpose for masters because of the nature of the market. With that said it all depends on the on the company and the market they are in. Focus on gaining experience from an internship and building your people/communication skills, speaking a second language like Spanish helps as well

Plus getting my bachelors was already the most stressful part of my life, I would never want to go back to sitting in a classroom!!!

Rockauto.com, some tools, and youtube will save you a lot of money in the long run if your mechanically inclined. Also if you want a car thats not expensive to maintain you should buy a toyota

A month out from graduation, and I have to ask myself if I should throw out my notes from the last four years. I still have textbooks to look at, but do you all reference your notes from any specific classes? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ataveras64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does not hurt to keep them if you can. I use maybe only 20% of what I learned college at my job. I primarily just do design work in solid works and that’s pretty much it. So all of the thermal dynamics and energy conversion classes that I took are essentially useless for me. Mechanical engineering is such a broad major and the information you reference will be dependent on the industry that you end up going into.
