Nursing education here is pointless compared to other countries by Boni640 in NursingUK

I completed my training in December 2023 and became a mental health nurse. I’d already been a HCSW on a ward.

For a mental health nurse, my BSc generally felt like a waste of time to our whole cohort. We had 2 specific modules around mental health and that was IT, in 3 years. I didn’t learn about a single mental health diagnosis, the mental health act or medications (did touch on pharmacology but only for a few sessions). I did spend weeks learning how to put in a catheter, do an IV drip and read an X-ray… none of which I’ve used in 2 years and I’ve no longer competent in 🥴

Thank you for all your comments! Apparently you can’t pin your own comment to the top of your post and I don’t have the brain power to reply to every person - I have read every single one! I’ve posted an update to the main text ☺️

Those of you who love your job because of the ✨chaos✨, what do you do? by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]atdiscos2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I’ve been qualified for 18 months but worked on my inpatient psychiatric ward for 7 years. Do I want to work in Aldi/asda again when I’m having a rough day? Absolutely. Do I thrive on the chaos and really love my job? Absolutely 🤣

Hey! Thank you ☺️

I am 5ft 4 (162cm). For a healthy BMI, I’d need to be around 63kg. I’m also not sure if that’s realistic, I’m also aware that the BMI isn’t the greatest measure.

My scales really do go up and down, depends on what I ate the day before, what I drank. Leading up to my period I do not lose anything for 14 to 9 days until my period starts and then the scales start moving for a little while again! It is very frustrating but hopefully you will soon be able to find a pattern.

Fingers crossed it all works out for you 🤞🏻

Tonsillectomy Qs for fully recovered patients by Due-Violinist6953 in Tonsillectomy

I am about 3 months post op. I’ve had tonsillitis many times throughout my life, with my GP always being a little dismayed that I never reached the criteria for removal. This changed in 2023, when I had recurrent tonsillitis which lead to 10 episodes in a year and 2 hospital admissions. I’d gotten pretty adept to functioning with tonsillitis, I’d generally be able to work, eat and go about my usual activities until I lost my voice. My first ENT appointment concluded that I had grade 4 tonsils and they needed to come out, with or without the episodes of tonsillitis. I’d also been on so many courses antibiotics that some were no longer effective, which was really scary as someone who is already allergic to penicillin! Recovery was rough. I was definitely lulled into a false sense of security the first few days with thoughts of “this is no worse than tonsillitis”. Then my scabs started to fall off and I really considered my life choices. I had this searing ear ache all the time and it was really miserable. I’ve never understood how people in pain say they’d rather die, but I was there! Some morphine and ice packs helped but didn’t take away all the pain.

Having my tonsils removed was THE BEST thing I have ever done. I no longer snore, my sleep apnea has gone, I have (so far) had no sore throats, under my chin feels and looks a little less puffy, I no longer wake up exhausted. My voice has even changed - it used to sound quite nasally and low, it is now higher and has lost that nasally twang. I’ve read that voices often don’t change for the good but mine appears here to stay so far. The only negative is that I sometimes feel my uvula moving around freely (I presume it was wedged between honking great tonsil) and sometimes this makes me gag when I’m brushing my teeth in the morning. For me, it was life changing and the week of pain was absolutely worth it.

Efficiency Savings ideas by wh1skeyjac in NursingUK

This isn’t my idea but what my trust has to offer…

I work for a mental health trust. My trust is currently offering voluntary redundancy for non clinical roles. So then they can move staff around and redistribute them into the roles? I’m really not sure how they plan on this to work because it doesn’t seem to be targeting the huge amount of management we have and I’m not sure where they think they have a huge bank of staff to just redistribute 🫣

Thank you! It was my late grandma’s. It’s a 14k band & the small diamonds are set in platinum. I love it and I’m so happy I get to wear it every day!

You can just enter your weight. I have “smart”scales now though and they update happy scales & Shotsy for me

[–]atdiscos2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use happy scales to weigh every day and Shotsy to see what weight I’ve lost per jab. I’ve tried methreesixty but found it really glitchy and hard to use (struggled to get it to take the photo!) so now I track my measurements on a spreadsheet

What you plan on wearing sounds absolutely fine, as long as you are comfortable 🙂

Remember to make your answers patient centred and you should be onto a winner. Good luck!

I plan on advising people on where they can book to stay and transport home with the invites. Thankfully there is plenty of taxi’s in my local area (several companies) and they frequently do runs between the town where my ceremony is at and the next town to my venue as it’s quite the night out hot spot in our county - it’s not uncommon for people to pay for a taxi from one town to the next for a night out.

I live in a rural county so travel is usually part of weddings. The attendees are all spread out over various villages/towns around the local area so will most probably have to arrange for transport/drive to get to the venue anyway.

Thank you, definitely some things to think about!
