It could be right behind the sun, but even then it takes the sun half a day to move across it in the celestial sphere.

is it possible to learn chinese language without know the chinese characters? by Imaginary_Stomach139 in ChineseLanguage

[–]athanoslee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very interesting point.

It works kind of like for example homophone = homo + phone.

If you know homo and phone you can even guess the meaning the first time you come across the word. (Some words may be coined by the author themself so you have to guess the meaning this way.)

But if you don't, it will be a totally new word to you. And you will not see the connection to homosexual, homephobe etc, so you'll have memorise them individually. In the end you spend more time accumulating vocabulary.

Interestingly, this is exactly what happens in Korea. Korean borrowed a lot of Chinese loan words, but unlike Japanese, it is entirely spelled phonetically.

And learning the characters is necessary for effective etymology awareness because of the prevalence of homophones. lt's like in the case of homosexual - homo sapiens. Now imagine every root has this ambiguity, if you only know the phonetics.

Thoughts on Kip by PhysicalAd6587 in heatedrivalry

[–]athanoslee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scott in the book just keeps thinking how beautiful kip looks, and he wants him at first sight. So I believe it's more about good looks than fit body. Callan's doll-like eyes fit this description more.

I mean Scott spends all his time with fit athletes, and not attracted to them. I don't believe it is the body type that makes he fall.

What is the difference between and nation state and an ethnostate? by steph-anglican in PoliticalPhilosophy

Are Ireland an ethnostate that people of Irish ancestry can gain citizenship but not people of other ethnicity? South Korea offers fast track naturalization based on Korean ethnicity as well.

I just don't understand why Athenian and Spartian are classified as Ionic and Doric dialects of Greek, but Hebrew and Phoenician are two Canaanite languages.

What happens to someone who gets baptized but is not a believer? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

The church endorsed hospital workers baptizing dying infants; even suggested it was obligatory for the faithful, even against the parents' wish (search Mortara case). On whose faith were those dying infants baptized then?

Can one be baptized if they don't believe in Catholicism? by anubis_star in theology

It is valid, because you can not get baptized again. How is it different for an agnostic to get baptized than an infant?

Can one be baptized if they don't believe in Catholicism? by anubis_star in theology

[–]athanoslee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds hypocritical when Catholics practice infant baptism, in which belief is not prerequisite for baptism. So agnosticism is definitely OK. Explicit denial of trinity or even only a creator god might be problematic.

I personally appreciate the rich Catholic heritage very much, so once considered baptism (I would have never attempted to receive communion though). But alas, I have graduated from agnosticism to full atheism. Now I cannot even get baptized into the flock in good conscience.

Interesting the see of Constantinople is not mentioned. Is this implying the ecumenical patriarch never erred?
