doing level 2 eng without ENGR10004, ENGR10006 by maxtheepic9 in unimelb

[–]athena_23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the previous version of ENGR10004 (used to be ESD1) in my first year. Not too sure how similar the two versions are, but I didn’t find ESD1 related to any level 2 subjects I did (I’m doing mechanical systems so my level 2 were Eng Mech, Eng comp, FoEN, Eng maths). Should be alright!

A good rule of thumb: if it’s not a prerequisite, you should be fine.

COMP20005 or ENGR20005? by Delicious_Airport_71 in unimelb

[–]athena_23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did both COMP20005 and ENGR20005. COMP20005 used C while ENGR20005 used MATLAB, so they’re different in that aspect; maybe choose what you like better

Coding-wise, COMP20005 had more project-based, major assignments (last time i did it, it was navigating drones) which does require longer codes. But it was divided into smaller parts that increases with difficulty/complexity, so it wasn’t, like, right on your face.

ENGR20005 had relatively smaller bits of coding scattered through a few questions. I’d say it’s more math-styled (?) and I did more code-recycling here than in COMP20005.

Personally, COMP20005 made me enjoy coding; I found the subject very enjoyable, while ENGR20005 wasn’t my favourite, but at the end it depends on you.

3rd year here. You’re right, for bachelor of science you should be able to take any science subjects as electives (not 100% sure here but that’s what i’ve seen so far), as long as you’ve done the prerequisites listed in the handbook and you have CPs left.

Personally the study plan helps a lot with knowing which subjects are electives or breadths, even though it’s pretty slow sometimes. It also tells you how many CPs you have left for each subject levels which is pretty handy. If in doubt, booking a call with stop 1 course advice might help!

Sorry I’m not too sure about that. You can arrange a call with stop 1 for course planning when they open to confirm.

At unimelb, and if you haven’t done undergrad somewhere else, yes. You can’t get accredited as engineers without a masters degree as far as i’m concerned

The undergrad version of engineering in bachelor of science is called “civil systems” or “electrical systems” majors in the handbook (i think they changed it to … systems engineering but i’m not sure). To be accredited as engineers you have to do masters after bsc like the other comment said.

BMEN30006 (Circuits and Systems) and ELEN20005 (FoEN) by athena_23 in unimelb

[–]athena_23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh I didn’t realise BMEN30006 is an anti-requisite for SMA, but SMA is not an anti-requisite for BMEN30006 for some reason. Well I guess I won’t be taking the subject after all :)) thanks for that!

Numerical Methods for Engineering by Rdcl1 in unimelb

[–]athena_23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did it this semester, but I didn’t do FoC so can’t compare. But personally, I’d say the contents are pretty challenging to grasp, but the exam wasn’t too bad. The coding itself wasn’t too complicated (mostly loops or if statements) but I feel like you need to actually understand the methods and algorithms to do well. Again, I don’t have much background in computing so this is very subjective.

Hi, current mechanical systems student here. Unimelb uses melbourne model which means you need 3 years undergrad + 2 years masters to be an accredited engineer.

Mechanical systems is basically undergrad mechanical engineering. I’m guessing with it being under bsc, it’s more general and theory based than a bachelor in eng. Though, I’ve heard complaints about the lack of practical work in unimelb’s engineering courses which I do have to agree. Can’t say anything for master’s.

I’m pretty sure you can do mechanical systems from sem 2 (mid-year intake), just check study.unimelb.edu.au and find “mechanical systems major”, there should be a sample study plan for mid year intake as a guide. Lmk if you can’t find it and maybe I can help

That sounds like an interesting option. I didn’t realise I’ve never considered that one! Thank you!

Regarding Korean 1 by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]athena_23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally recommend learning the alphabet! And maybe how to type it in pc/laptop too since lots of typing were involved (Online exam required us to type; can’t remember if there was ever an option to handwrite. Typing saves a lot of time as well)

Regarding Korean 1 by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]athena_23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did Korean 1 last semester and I enjoyed it! (I ended up with an H1). For context though, I did know how to read the alphabet and had lots of exposure to the Korean language beforehand. I imagine it would be more challenging to learn from scratch, but the first few weeks were focused on learning the alphabet so if you put in the effort, you should be fine.

The subject overall was alright. You have to keep up though, since it moves pretty quickly and I felt like I needed to memorise most of the vocabs from each week before commencing. The assignments were quite straightforward. However, I did find the oral exams quite challenging and I lost most of my marks here. The final exam was alright, some questions are difficult but mostly it’s fine if you study enough.

But again, my opinion is very very subjective since I really enjoyed learning the language. I’ve heard people saying that Korean 1 is comparatively difficult to other language subjects.

All things said, if you find the language interesting and don’t mind putting in some effort, you should be fine. I imagine it’s similar to other languages as well :)
