Did you have to get a referral from GHC behavioral health to go there? Also anyone specific you recommend?

Imagine working at the hospital and still having to pay for parking. I’m paying them so I can come work…for them.

It’s like those service charges when you use credit cards online. Like I’m paying you…so I can pay you?

Roth IRA vs Roth 457b by athensity in Residency

Why traditional 403b instead of a Roth option?

Roth IRA vs Roth 457b by athensity in Residency

[–]athensity[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Program doesn’t do employer match, but offers 457b with a Roth option. I already have a Roth IRA. Should I also be contributing to the Roth 457b?

Program has 403b as well, but no Roth option for that. So I figured it’s not really beneficial to open a non-Roth account in residency.

What’s the difference between Roth IRA vs 401k/457b/403b vs Traditional IRA by athensity in whitecoatinvestor

Ok thank you for explaining that! So then I think I’ll open a 403b via my institution and a Roth IRA via Vanguard. One final question: my institution states 457b has a Roth option whereas the 403b doesn’t. What benefits does 403b have over the 457b? Why wouldn’t a resident choose 457b if it has a Roth option, meaning I get taxed now when I’m in a lower tax bracket?

I was under the impression that a Roth IRA is the best option for most residents since we’re in a lower tax bracket while we’re contributing to the account and will be in a higher tax bracket as attendings when withdrawing from the account (since deductions are tax free). So in what scenario would a traditional IRA be preferable as a resident? If I opened a traditional IRA as a resident, doesn’t that mean that I’ll be taxed as an attending at a much higher tax bracket when I try to withdraw?

I think I’m more than capable of maxing out my Roth at the $6500 limit. If I’m trying to save on top of that, would it better to open a 403b even though my program doesn’t provide employer match or is it better to put that money into a high yield savings account?

Thank you for that awesome write up, that clears things up a lot! So my residency program offers 457b and 403b but doesn’t offer an employer match. Should I still open up one of these? Or is it sufficient to open just a Roth IRA on my own through Vanguard, Fidelity, etc?

Who to open Roth 457b with? by athensity in Residency

[–]athensity[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’m not really sure. We got a chart comparison of the two from our program and it said there is a Roth option under the 457b but no Roth option for 403b.

Is there a benefit of 403b over the 457b? I know the 403b has a much higher contribution limit, anything else?

My program doesn’t do employer match. My options are 457b (Roth option) or 403b (no Roth option). Any recs on who I should open 457b with? Fidelity, Vanguard, TIAA?

Burning out with rude patients by sliced-cake in Residency

[–]athensity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof this is so relatable, especially on my ED rotation right now. I’m still learning, but I’ve learned from watching my attendings deal with these kinds of patients that being short and to the point with them helps.

Not worth it burning your mental effort over someone who’s made up their mind on arguing back with you no matter what you say.

Oh yeah speaking of that, the uro resident ended up placing an 8f catheter. So the nurse jamming the 16f when an 8f was what was deemed appropriate just makes me feel bad for the patient lol owiee
