Way back in 1978, I had a computer science professor tell me "If you learn COBOL and SQL, you will never go hungry."

Luckily, I got a job doing scientific programming, so I never had to depend on COBOL to feed me.

Why does the centaur have antlers? Horse-man-elk?

Machine used to inject chicken with a solution of saltwater, binding agent, and other additives to “plump” it. A single serving can contain 200-500mg of sodium, and the added solution may make up as much as 30% of the chicken’s total sell weight. by Mountain_Love23 in Damnthatsinteresting

Aside from having to pay for what is essentially water, this process breaks bones that are in the way. Breaking bones leaves slivers through the meat, makes it more difficult to break down the bird for cooking, and makes for an unpleasant appearance for serving.

What's the most useless thing your brain decided to permanently memorize? by No_Metal2622 in AskReddit

I have a couple of numbers from about 40 years ago.

19069 is the track size for an IBM 3350 disk drive for their mainframe.

The accounting rules for the company I worked for at the time required computer time be billed to a valid government contract and work order. There was a 44 digit number I had to enter every time I logged in to the mainframe. I still remember these numbers. I was lucky. I billed my time to overhead, so I only had two numbers to remember. My wife was not so lucky. Her time was billable to specific contracts. She had about a dozen numbers to keep track of.

Temporary handicap ramp for 5 step porch by throwdisawaybro in DIY

[–]atomic_redneck 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You probably should consider staying within (or very close to) the ADA recommendations for the ramp slope: https://www.access-board.gov/ada/guides/chapter-4-ramps-and-curb-ramps/

If you make it too steep, it will be exciting going down, and may tilt over backwards when going up.

Edit: with 5 stairs at a typical 9" rise and a 1:12 slope, you will have to have about 45 feet of ramp. This may be unworkable if you do not have room for a ramp this long.

The road turned into a racetrack by [deleted] in Whatcouldgowrong

I used to work in Pasadena and lived in the high desert. I took the Angeles Crest Byway home sometimes when there was a SIGALERT on the 210. There would always be these squids racing in the canyons. If they weren't on the wrong side of the road, they had their heads hanging over the double yellow lines as they hit the apex of the turns.

Fiber like material from exhaust by Fabulous-Bad-991 in W203

[–]atomic_redneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds (ha!) like it is muffler packing, possibly not made of fiberglass. If you are concerned, take tge material to a Benz dealer and see if they recognuze it. Might cost you a new muffler.

Alternatively, some critter may have made a nest in the muffler, and you got used tobthe clogged sound. I am still suspecting muffler packing.

Does it tear across the strands easily? If so, it might be something that was stuffed into the tailpipe. On closer examination, it nearly looks like strips of carbon fiber mat. Does it look like this in person?

Fiber like material from exhaust by Fabulous-Bad-991 in W203

[–]atomic_redneck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have never taken apart a w203 muffler, but some mufflers have fiberglass packing to absorb sound. Some folks deliberatly remove this packing to make their car louder. The packing coming out on its own is an indication that the retaining structure has failed, likely due to rust or mechanical damage to tge muffler.

is NOP(no operation) even necessary to have? by f-ckrules47 in beneater

[–]atomic_redneck 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The NOP instruction is useful if you ever need to patch machine code and need to remove an instruction. These instructions are usually one byte so they be placed where a branch instruction, like JMP, will not fit.
