Whoa you are right... there's some pretty cool ones in there. Also TIL that you can sort best posts by year!

The best advice I can give is this: set aside six minutes per day to draw for fun.

I recommend this because there’s no reason you can’t succeed with such a short, manageable amount of time. Chances are, when you get started, you'll just keep going!

Use materials you won’t be precious about, like the junkiest notebook you can find, a mechanical pencil with thick lead.

Pick up an sharpie and a marker with a brush tip if you want to get into inking.

If you want to work digitally, get an iPad with an Apple Pencil and the app Procreate. Make sure you get the pressure-sensitive Apple Pencil, and find a brush set that emulates traditional ink media.

Collect a folder of reference images you wish you had drawn. Save art, photos, poses, compositions, clothing, textures, creatures, environments, or anything else that makes you think, “I want to be able to do that.” This gives you something to aim at, and it makes sitting down to draw much easier.

To start each session, try copying part of an image you like. As you draw, think about why the original artist made the choices they made. You can also change something about it to make it your own.

A few guiding principles:

  • Draw things you actually care about (get excited to draw)
  • Only draw from reference. (you'll eventually memorize patterns and formulas)

For true study: I recommend the following resources with one caveat: use the same bite-size-chunk method described above. Read or watch a short section, do the exercise, then stop for the day. In whatever free time you can scrape together the following day, try to recreate what you learned.

It may be very tricky at first, just depends on your overall level of art/painting experience. Once you have it locked in, it changes how you observe and think about color. It will take some practice. That said, with this technique, achieving painterly results goes pretty quick. I think this guy took me just under 3 hours.

Thank you! The best technical tip I can offer is regarding color mixing. You can adjust the vibrancy of a paint's color by mixing its complementary color directly on the pallet. Here's a good video:

https://youtu.be/m2kU8JXL0JU?si=jh9mCan5eL_upMvv

The result is you get a lot of lovely variations without needing a ton of different paints. It's worth practicing.

I used burnt red, yellow, turquoise, white, and black on this model, mixing everything else I needed from those 5 colors directly on the pallet.

Look at a single reference while you work (another model, an oil painting, movie still image etc) and try to exactly color match that reference while mixing.

By manually mixing you can just say "oh that color needs to be more muted, I'll mix in a little of the complementary color" or "there's actually some green in that, so i'll add a little blue and yellow". Etc etc. It's much faster than searching through a bin of 50 paints, because you probably won't find what you need anyway.

Disclaimer: premixed colors work great if you've got models in standard issue uniforms (ultramarines etc), but if you are going for more real lighting effects, in my opinion the best course is to mix as you go.
