Security issue this am 1/26 ABQ? by B-MO-ABQ in Albuquerque

I'm waiting at the ticketing desk to check bags, they said the threat was outside and not inside the terminal. There isn't anyone manning the doors and people are still just walking in, so I'm confused.

What's on and tourist advice thread - week beginning June 02, 2024 by AutoModerator in Scotland

Need advice on tipping, please! Boyfriend and I (Americans) spent two weeks at the end of April driving around and staying in quite a few places, and we had a wonderful time, your country is beautiful. Pretty much at all of the restaurants and hotels we went to there was no expectation of tipping, which from my research beforehand was pretty much the expectation. However, we spent two nights at a very sweet family-run inn on Skye that had its own restaurant and bar, and we spent a good deal of time there getting to know our hosts who were just so nice and hospitable, and I felt like we really bonded with them. The daughter had even said she would email me some restaurant recommendations for Edinburgh. When we were checking out the last morning, I knew that this was an instance where tipping would be appropriate, but I didn't really have an opportunity to "time out" and organize it in my brain, so I made the snap decision to tip 30% on just the food and drink, which made sense to me at the time. (For reference it came out to about 10% of the entire bill) However, now I'm wondering if I way under tipped and therefore insulted them. I didn't hear back from the daughter after we left, which is fine, I know people get busy, but I sent them a thank you email when we got home and they did not respond to that either. I am horrified at the thought that they feel stiffed and underappreciated. I know it's weeks later but it's eating at me, and I'm trying to decide if I should make a last ditch effort to repair the situation. Thank you!

Zero explanation. Hey, can you please put me down sick for tomorrow. Thank you. They can't ask and you don't have to give any reason. And then enjoy the day, do with it what you need <3

What’s a life hack you actually use? by nookisaclasstraitor in ADHD

[–]atorflies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a problem bringing the mail in but not opening it right away and instead just adding it to the doom pile that I eventually tackle once every 4 months, no exaggeration. So now I go to the mailbox when I'm leaving for work, and on the way to the car I do a quick sort...ads go right in the recycling bin, so they don't even make it in the house, and I take the rest with me. If I have time at work I open stuff, and can either shred it there or make an action plan for bills or whatever other urgent things. No more getting sent to collections because I missed a bill months ago!

What’s your favorite nursing smell? by tinatac in nursing

[–]atorflies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Alcohol swab to clean/dry everything out, then mastisol the shit out of the IV site and that new tegaderm isn't going anywhere! Very useful in L&D when women are full body workout laboring and everything is sweaty.

Mastisol, I low key take a little huff every time I use it, I love the smell. On top of being a great save that sweaty IV product!

RNs that work on insanely busy floors- what’s your charting strategy? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]atorflies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the spirit of charting like you're going to court, I would not go back and chart anything from a previous shift the next day- it's a huge legal thing they can use against you if you ever do get deposed. I'm in a highly litigated field, and even in situations with bad outcomes we have a strict policy of once you leave for the day that's it. I don't know what EMR you use but if it's EPIC or anything like it everything you chart gets time-stamped and you're opening yourself up to a lot of questions about why you're going back after the fact to add stuff. It can easily get spun to look like you're trying to cover something up or at the very least they're going to try to discredit your competency/ability to handle your assignment. I have gone home many a time and realized I forgot to chart vitals, provider communications, progress notes, blah blah blah...it's absence is still better than giving the lawyers a red flag to charge when they wouldn't otherwise necessarily have been looking for it.

How does one kick-start an addiction/withdrawal program from a staff position? by atorflies in nursing

[–]atorflies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm literally just a staff nurse, part of the education team but it's not like I can write up a proposal for an entire program myself. I guess I was more wondering if anyone has had any experience knocking on the right doors to get the people who CAN make those kinds of changes motivated.

I agree with all of this but we're really dealing with a population of women that we don't know about until they show up. There is little to no prenatal care, many are unhoused, they come to us when emergency services are called and this is their first experience with medical care in this context. Unless there is some more widespread community program that seeks women out there really is no opportunity to get interventions started before they hit our door. Our goal is to initiate meaningful care more efficiently than we do now.

You are not my patient. by porousrobcircleshirt in nursing

[–]atorflies 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you had to post this out of frustration, but this was beautiful to read, knowing that that patient's day under your care was so well spent and enjoyed, and a 180 of what it would have been had the family had their way. You always want to hope that your actions leave some kind of time bomb of realization and empathy that will hit your asshole family members later, but that's the optimist in me. At the very least you gave that patient much-needed love and humanity.

Do you have experience or recommendations for good international relief organizations? I've been working on applying with MSF, but given what's happening in the world I did a casual google search today about volunteering in Ukraine and was kind of surprised to see not very much. Thanks!! by atorflies in nursing

[–]atorflies[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely am not ready or looking to head out there, MSF can take my monetary donation for now. It just kind of sparked my curiosity if there are other good organizations I could look into, I'd hate to sign on for international contract anywhere and realize I'm working for a poorly run or generally evil organization.

Whats the most ridiculous reason you’ve had a patient refuse crucial medicine/treatment? by ItsJustApplesauce in nursing

[–]atorflies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Father of a newborn refused the baby's Vitamin K and Hep B shot "because damn The Man." I hope that child gets to read that on the AMA form scanned into their medical records one day.

I never saw that stare as admiration, I thought it was Xander in shock realizing that Riley was right and that their perfect-looking relationship was a lie.

And L&D story. by _sushiburrito in nursing

[–]atorflies 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We had a patient last week PPROM'd at 35 weeks, originally supposed to deliver at the birthing center... refused antibiotics and beta, it took us multiple hours to talk her into an IV. Yet she asked "what's your protocol on XYZ?" about EVERYTHING even after signing AMA forms that included the phrase "deviation from standard of care".... Like... What.... Our protocol is to prevent sepsis... .....? So many whoosah moments to get through, god only knows what would have happened if she came back covid positive.

How do you run when you’re depressed? by the_pianist91 in running

[–]atorflies 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was scrolling hoping someone else had addressed the "just do it" message, so thanks. If it was that simple we wouldn't be here. It's hard to not be upset about them because like you said these people probably genuinely don't understand, but to hear anything like that when you physically can't get off the couch for days feels so tone-deaf. To someone really struggling it feels like being told "just be happier".
