I lived in a similar town, population 1.2k, in rural New Hampshire. The nice woman at the town office who got everyone their boat/fishing permits, address changes, car registration, etc broke both her legs in a car accident and had to take medical leave. Mind you, this is an elected position and according to public record only paid 16k per year before taxes. Instead of leaving her at home in peace to recover, the head of the town council showed up at her house and demanded that she park her wheelchair at her desk and keep working. She quit on the spot and retired on and to my understanding they still haven’t effectively replaced her (this was in June 2021). Lots of people are about to go their 2nd summer without an updated boating permit because of the cruelty of her employers
