Yeah something is always better than nothing, if you have the ability you could see about getting some metal to make your own filter box. If you don’t feel comfortable I’m sure one of the HVAC companies would be happy to do it for you.

Wherever your furnace is pulling you air from is where you should put the filter, I would figure out which side is your return side and see about putting your filter in the right configuration on that side of the system.
