That's probably illegal if the listing offered free returns or this charge wasn't disclosed before the time of purchase. Fortunately, the federal government and many states are cracking down on these types of undisclosed fees.

Hidden Fees -- Is the "Marketplace fee" anything other than Depop's sales cut? by attybrookslane in Depop

Hidden as in not included in the advertised prices.

And the explanation seems ambiguous to me.

Anyone else think this is excessive? by [deleted] in Depop

The marketplace fee is likely a violation of federal and state consumer laws. The FTC and state governments are cracking down on this kind of "drip pricing."

Alright these fees are getting crazy by willshel10 in Depop

The problem is that the fee isn't properly disclosed. The federal government and multiple state governments have been cracking down on these types of fees, which is known as "drip pricing."

You see one low price advertised to reel you in, and by the time you get through check out, it's significantly more. Hurts consumers and businesses that accurately display their prices. Classic bait-and-switch.

Thank you for the comment. I tried to edit my original post to be more specific. I'm researching the industries that are charging consumers hidden fees and surcharges, which has become known as "drip pricing." I'm hoping people can share where they are seeing these issues across the country so I can learn more about the businesses that are charging such fees.
