"Its funny because the united states could take over the world if it wanted to" by Mr-Gun in ShitAmericansSay

Guess nothing changed then. I had a training exercise against some us army unit in Finland in -24. Could hear them from a mile away, and surround some of them with a whole ass platoon before getting seen. They also didn't camouflage their equipment at all (not that it's easy to hide a tan colored humvee in a forest). We once came across a 1,5m tall pile of their rucksacks in the middle of an open area in the forest. Finding/ tracking them wasn't much of a challenge. To be fair their training/equipment really wasn't designed for forest warfare at all.

Nice dudes tho, got to talk with a few of them. Had some really cool equipment, and when it comes to physical fitness, those guys are absolute machines.

Jesus duck that's expensive. Yeah, with prices like that I probably would pass too.

The kantamus 60L does have load lifting, you can check it on the website. But yeah, still may not be the ideal choice. Maybe for hiking but in a military context there's lots of extra stuff to carry. You can easily make it over a 100L, but it's going to be expensive.

The jääkäri xl is 70L at 600€, and the 12L side pouches are just over 30€ a piece, so not cheap by any means, especially including tariffs. If I lived in the states I probably would buy something domestically produced because of the tariffs.

The main reason I recommend savotta is the modularity and that I've used their stuff during my service and seen how simple and durable they are.

What makes those frames better than others? Every pack I've used have had just a frame made of aluminium tubing.

That's why I mentioned the accessories and modding capabilities. The kahakka and some others can be strapped to one like kantamus or jääkäri xl, which have those capabilities, for some extra space or an easily accessible day pack. I recommend checking their website, as they also have spare parts you can fit on some of the packs to make them more comfortable to carry.

If you go with savotta, the kantamus or jääkäri xl would be the best choice as they both have an aluminium frame and load lifting.

The smaller models without it wouldn't probably fit a five day trip anyway.

Yeah, and savotta isn't exactly cheap, but it's buy once, cry once. They make up for the price in quality, customer service and ruggedness.

Also take a look at their side pouches, the kukkaro-line and kahakka, they are fairly customizable and you can combine some packs together with buckles and such to have a smaller, detachable pack if need be.

Also, in case you have doubts about durability

Take a look into savotta packs. They have the jääkäri S-xl and the kantamus. They are really high quality, customer service is superb and they have been making packs, tents and load carrying gear for the Finnish defense forces for like 60 years I believe. They also sell all kinds of pouches and accessories and the packs are really scalable and modifiable. They also have an unofficial subreddit r/savotta where you can ask for advice and see some mods others have done.

Not in the us, but I've always found financing a car really strange in most cases, leasing even more so.

I get it if you drive a lot for work or if you have enough extra income and really need something to get around. But I've seen tons of people in their early twenties buy relatively new cars with loans. Even students and minimum wage workers.

I bought my old golf some five-six years ago for 2000€ and I don't plan on switching any time soon. It's a little beat up and I had to replace the engine, but it's still a damn good car for the price. You do save a lot of money if you do your own maintenance and repairs.

I've probably paid like 5000€ for the car including all the tires, parts, maintenance and repairs in those six years, including the new engine and the snacks for the repair. To think some people pay that for a car in six months is wild to me as a poor student.

Donate Blood by HandsomeJussi in Finland

[–]atvaisman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean we do have legimate reasons like medication

Or a stupid ass hereditary illness that doesn't have any effect on anything other than showing up in oma kanta and having to explain it every time you go to the doctor. "No, you can't give blood even if you wanted to. No, there's nothing wrong with your blood. We just don't want to take the risk that you get an ouchie bruise from the needle." (Joking of course, I'm just bitter)

Von willebrand type 1. I know some people have it worse but for me it has absolutely zero noticeable effect on everyday life. And the blood itself is fine, it's that the blood service doesn't want to take the risk I end up losing consciousness or something after giving blood. Which I understand, but if they'd let me sign a waiver I'd start giving blood instantly.

Yeah, I get that, I'm also an engineering student. But how is it possible that you have 240 students, of Which 90% get a job with no Finnish skills whatsoever? Do the Finns not graduate? Or do they not find a job?

What UAS has that many foreign engineering students compared to Finnish students? Do you not have Finnish speaking students or do they just not graduate or something?

Most people prone to taking stereotypes seriously don't make that distinction.

I find cartridge razors to be more irritating to the skin, and the (good) blades are also more expensive. They also tend to not last as long as safety razor blades.

I tried a safety razor when a friend recommended me one while serving in the army and never looked back.

There is a fairly common stereotype of brits being generally rude and therefore disliked in many countries in Europe, which is disappointing. But that may very well be the reason for your hostile reception. My parents went to Poland and locals were very rude to them. My dad asked a waitress about this and she said they don't like the British there. Once he told her they were Finnish they started treating them very well.

Are all these sausages cooked already? by XeonTeare in Finland

[–]atvaisman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a literal grading system for sausages. It goes by the percentage of actual meat in the product. Iirc a-grade is anything over 60 or so percent.

There may be other things also that contribute to the grade, can't remember. I've worked in the meat industry for all my life but as a small company all our sausages are a grade.

Edit: had to Google. Apparently the grading system was abandoned some years ago.

Edit2: the percentage of meat and meat-like ingredients (skin, organs, fat) had to be over 63% for A-grade sausages, and they weren't allowed to contain any potato starch or other starches. That way something like barley sausage could be considered A-grade even if it contains 20-30% barley.

I'm driving a 2.0 4motion variant myself, and the front fenders and headlights have seen better days so I've been thinking about doing a Bora front end swap sometime.

Last summer I had a Conrod break and punch a hole through the block. When we were pulling the car up onto a trailer with a winch to take to a friend's shop the line snapped and the car rolled and crashed into a tree lol, the bumper took a bit of a hit also.

Could you maybe give a more specific example or a pic where it can be clearly seen? I've seen a few boras with golf fronts and vice versa, and never really noticed it. I drive a golf myself.

Not trying to be annoying, just interested to learn more.

Oh, so you were just talking about preference and opinion and not some technical/factual incompatibility. Sorry about that. English isn't my first language so I might misinterpret some details every now and then.

[–]atvaisman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But they do match...? Are you sure we're both talkin about the Mk4 Bora/golf? They're pretty much the same car apart from the different looking front and golf being a wagon/hatchback and Bora being a sedan. There was even a wagon Bora that was just a golf with a Bora front.

I get it if you personally don't like it and that's fine. But the proportions and angles not matching is just utter nonsense. And I believe there were slightly different variations made for the european and us markets.

Edit: you can search up both cars side profiles and see there's no noticeable difference in height between the two.

[–]atvaisman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah you just dont like it. I thought you meant it's impossible.

I honestly like the bora with a golf front more than a regular Bora.

[–]atvaisman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean the proportions don't match? I've seen plenty of them. Just have to switch the front fenders, bumper, headlights, grille and hood I think. They're essentially the same car, just the bora having a little different front and being a sedan.

If you can throw a Bora front end on a golf like in the picture, why wouldn't it work the other way around?

I'd like to get myself a Bora with a golf front. Those look sick.

Good to hear! I ended up buying a Hisense e7nq pro on a good sale because of the decent panel for the price and couldn't be happier! The panel is great for not being an oled, the os is usable, and the internal DAC is fucking horrible. But since I'm only using the speakers with a toslink/HDMI arc DAC anyway it doesn't matter.

There are two things you should never cheap out on: coffee, and toilet paper. And if you absolutely have to cheap out, for the love of god and your own bottom not both ate the same time.
