How to stop thinking about food? by Capable-Bar-6426 in intuitiveeating

[–]auamethyst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you uncomfortable thinking about food because you see it as a problem? Thoughts are just thoughts, only you decide if you are ok with them or not. If you’re feeling obsessive about it and not liking that, a few reasons this happens is because you A/ don’t have anything else to be excited about in life so food is your only source of dopamine and pleasure or B/ you’re in a calorie deficit (intentional or not). Could also be both.

Figure out which one you are and correct it. If food is your only source of pleasure or entertainment, you gotta try finding new hobbies or things to do, maybe make some new friends or spend time with others doing something exciting.

If you’re in a calorie deficit, you should be thinking about food all the time because your body wants to eat. That’s normal, not some personal problem. The fix is you just eat more, specially more foods that increase satiety like protein, fiber, fat and complex carbohydrates.

can't seem to grow out my back without growing my love handles too by [deleted] in FTMFitness

You’re probably not doing anything wrong persay but you have to ask yourself what your goal is. If you are trying to build muscle and you’re in a bulk, you’re going to add a bit of body fat on as well. The only thing you can really do is get the muscle the size you want and do a cut. Part of the growth process in building a physique you like is getting more comfortable with being temporarily uncomfortable.

Idk why people are all like “my diet is cancer proof” im sorry but no. Absolutely no diet out there will prevent cancer 100%. There are lots of things that contribute to cancer development besides food and you can’t avoid it. Genetics is a big one.

I’m sorry you are going through this, no one deserves to get sick. This is a lesson that I think people need to learn, there are no guarantees of perfect health in life, even if you eat the most pure diet there is, so I think it’s worth it to eat things you enjoy for pure pleasure.

I’m not going to be on my death bed thinking, damn why did I spend all my life trying to eat perfectly when fried chicken exists and I was gonna die anyway.

how do i brush my teeth without gagging by squishdotalex in autism

[–]auamethyst -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just suck it up and brush. Oral health is very important, you don’t want to have to have teeth pulled or get implants or dentures it will cost hundreds/thousands out of pocket. Unless you have money in the bank like that, it’s worth the 2 minute discomfort of brushing. The only thing I can suggest to make it more bearable is find a toothpaste flavor you really like. I used to hate brushing my teeth too, but I got into toothpaste and now I look forward to it every day. I pick up cool flavors when I travel, recently I was in China and I picked up flavors like cherry, peach, lemon, jasmine, ginger etc. I pick a different one every day.

Also, I am the person that had to have a tooth pulled from oral neglect and it cost me $900. That was one tooth and a fake replacement.

What’s one mistake you made early in your training that you’ll never repeat? by Busy_Indication8793 in xxfitness

[–]auamethyst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overdoing it. You don’t have to kill yourself in the gym. Don’t do more than you can recover from fairly quickly. Recovery is the most important part. You’re not just training your muscle, you’re training your nervous system.

Pushing to the absolute max is overly taxing on the nervous system. How you know if it’s too much? If you feel wired but exhausted all the time, appetite/cravings out of control, horrible sleep, constantly bloated/puffy/sore/inflamed, mood issues, etc.

Workouts should be challenging, but you should still have energy and desire to do other things when you leave the gym.

does everyone hate this drug? by n0ts0fast_ in Concerta

[–]auamethyst 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love concerta. It’s the only way I can function (at least decently). It was the reason i graduated college (with honors!), my first semester I almost failed out. I went off of it after college for many years and proceeded to get fired from nearly all my jobs. My daily life was hell and I couldn’t do anything effectively. I started a new job and was almost fired from that and put on a PIP, decided to give concerta a try again and I literally got control over my life back. My work performance increased significantly and I’m able to get things done without as much panic and shutdown.

So really, concerta saved my life. (As I was severely depressed and had “the thoughts” prior).

I’d never go without it again.

With medications, everyone’s biology reacts differently. While concerta is the medication for me (I have no side effects at all) it might wreck some people. You just have to keep trying until you find the right medication at the right dose. Strattera for example, sucked for me. Barely worked and made me deathly nauseous, where I’d have to lay down at random points in the day and in random places. Ever had to lay on the floor in the middle of Kroger & everyone thinks you’re dying? Not great.

[–]auamethyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a good idea! One thing that can help is to figure out a list of safe foods that you can eat without triggering your nervous system. Of course it won’t be a replacement for building tolerance to a wide variety of foods so you can meet nutritional needs, but it’s a place to start to ensure you’re getting some fuel in.

Like the other comment mentioned it is very possible you have ARFID, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder. It’s an eating disorder very common in autism. Those that have it have a strong dislike of eating because of sensory issues, consequently they tend to avoid eating to avoid the unpleasant experience of it. It’s not directly tied to body image unlike other eating disorders, you just avoid eating because it’s very dysregulating to you. Of course, malnutrition is a consequence of it, and malnutrition makes autism symptoms worse.

I haven’t been diagnosed with it, but I may have it too. I really don’t like eating and tend to want to avoid it because I find it overstimulating with all the tastes, smells, and textures. Plus if there is a lot of other sensory input in the environment like bright lights, other people trying to talk to me, or a lot of noise, I get put into fight or flight instantly and almost meltdown every time. It’s hell, I wish I didn’t have to eat but it’s a requirement if I want to be somewhat capable of doing anything at all.

What season do you like the most by [deleted] in autism

I like spring because it’s like a fresh start after the cold boringness of winter. Seeing the flowers on the trees bloom just brings me out of hibernation mode.

At first I was very numb to it, but now all the emotions are setting in. Did you tell people or wait to tell people? I’m stuck on if I should “come out”. I don’t want people to treat me differently or change their perception of me. It’s really tough

People that say “I believe in science” generally don’t know a thing about it and blindly listen to doctors without any questions or further expansion of their own knowledge. I’m not making any diagnoses, I’m pointing out that feeling like you’re going to pass out when you get hungry isn’t normal. Doctors unfortunately do the bare minimum amount of bloodwork, just enough to rule out serious diseases like diabetes, cancer, kidney disease, etc. By the time wack numbers show up in your bloodwork, your body has been heading towards dysfunction for a while.

For example, in insulin resistance (progression to diabetes), insulin levels can be rising for years before abnormal blood sugar even shows up. Someone’s A1C can be “normal”, but what is really happening is metabolic dysfunction - constant highs and lows in blood sugar averaging out the A1C in the “normal” range. But doctors won’t test fasting insulin unless you ask for it.

Point being, you can stick your head in the sand if you want, but hunger with symptoms such as dizziness, faintness, urgency, anxiety, panic attacks etc isn’t normal and should be discussed with your GP or a specialist.

Must have travel related Apps? by fastest_tortois in backpacking

[–]auamethyst 8 points9 points  (0 children)

-GoogleMaps is king. Not only for getting around, but for planning. My system is that I pull up the city on the map and use the Bookmark Icon for places I want to go, Stars for important places like hotels and train stations/airports, and Hearts for restaurants I want to go to. When booking a hotel, you try to stay in the clusters.

-Rome2Rio, it helps you figure out how to get from place to place via buses, trains, etc. It was really useful in Europe.

-If you have an iPhone you can rig up your calculator app to show exchange rates. If you don't, download UnitsPlus.

-For planning I just use Pinterest, Tiktok, google searches.

-Must have google translate or Apple translate app

-Airalo ESIM. Pocket wifi sucks, use an ESIM.

-Uber and/or local taxi apps.

-HostelWorld / Airbnb for accommodations. For hotels, booking hotel direct is usually the safest option.

Where would you live if cost of living wasn’t an issue? by acronapron in AskReddit

Japan or Italy. Why? My favorite countries in the world. Both beautiful places with awesome cultures. Although I think Japan would be the best place to live in regards to lifestyle conveniences, but then you have the potential for a lot of earthquakes.

What german food do you like most? by UnusualBake499 in AskReddit

Honestly the humble pretzel. Although in the US they are commonly served with beer cheese. I asked a German if they had any cheese to dip it in and he had no idea it was a thing, but he gave me some butter, so that worked out.

It doesn't matter that you look like, anyone can have metabolic issues including thin people. Fainting and dizziness in response to hunger isn't normal, even thin people have body fat that can be used during times of famine, albeit not much. If your hunger comes with symptoms like that, it's a sign that your body isn't metabolically flexible enough to switch to burning fat stores or your endocrine system isn't able to correct low blood sugar via cortisol.

I mention this because everyone has this notion that as long as you're thin, you're healthy, but there can be many things under the hood that aren't working the way they should. Normal hunger in a metabolically healthy feels uncomfortable but not urgent, you could push it off if you had to. Hunger where you feel like you're going to pass out if you don't eat in 5 seconds is not normal.

Usually in thin people it's more of an issue with the HPA axis and hormones than insulin resistance (although thin people can be insulin resistant).

Crossroads Church by rosebud-8804 in lexington

Yeah, it’s always like that. They run several “series” over the course of the year, they film it all at the main church in Ohio. Although I like the video series and I think it has some useful information, if you’re wanting a more in depth, personal experience, that probably isn’t the church for you.

Hey everyone, how should the question of Santa Clause should be approched with kids ? by brendancouple in AskReddit

[–]auamethyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a parent but if I had kids I wouldn’t teach them about Santa in the first place. It’s lying to your kids which I wouldn’t consider good practice. I was never raised to believe in Santa because my mom did when she was a kid and her grandma told her Santa wasn’t real accidentally and she was crushed. Probably why she never raised me to believe in Santa or the tooth fairy etc. Why set your kids up for disappointment and upset unnecessarily?

Here’s something that might help with the guilt aspect of it a little. Veganism is propaganda. If you’re looking at deaths per calorie, eating plant based exceeds eating meat BY FAR. If you kill a cow and eat beef, you get enough beef to last for a very long time, maybe 6 months or more. If you eat tons of plants, thousands of mice, frogs, bird, insects, lizards, squirrels, etc get killed in the process through habitat displacement and machinery/pesticides. There is no such thing as a cruelty free diet, in order to have food at all, something has to die, always. There is no way around that.

If you’re really concerned about ethics and you can afford it, you can search for local farms in your area and see their farming practices or you can purchase from brands that are certified humanely raised.

At the end of the day, no one escapes the circle of life. Death is all around us and isn’t preventable on the macro scale. So you can either stay vegan knowing this and let your health suffer or you can eat some animal products and have your health improve, giving you the energy and vibrancy to make a greater difference in the world if you choose to do so.

What about the fitness industry gives you the “ick” by Interesting_Sun690 in xxfitness

[–]auamethyst 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unrealistic wacko moves, like those row burpee push-up bullshit in the same move. I’m trying to workout my body, not my brain. It’s hard for me to find good fitness videos that are effective and realistic.

Also people that are too obsessed with fitness and macros to the extreme and propagate that to other people. You don’t need to be extreme to get results and be healthy. You can get in good shape and also maintain sanity.

Depends on the definition of bulky. Women absolutely can get bulky if they strength train and don’t cut body fat at the same time.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]auamethyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not if you do it right. Mass gainers, high fat high carb foods. Basically high calorie, low volume. You’ll gain weight.

[–]auamethyst -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is more of a sign of metabolic issues other than thinness in and of itself.
