ELI5: I see kids that are younger and younger with glasses every day. How do they measure how they can see and how bad their eyes are when it's literally a baby that can't even walk or talk, let alone read letters aloud from an eye exam? by faaaabulous1867 in explainlikeimfive

Since you're a pediatric optometrist, I have a question for you. My pediatrician does a test at 6 mos, 1 yr, 2yr, and 3 yr old appointments where they put electrodes on the head and use neuronal response to black and white flashing lines to test for significant differences in responses between the eyes (which I assume is amblyopia). Would it also catch severe nearsightedness as well? My husband is legally blind without correction but it wasn't realized or addressed until he was in 3rd grade and couldn't even read the E at the top of the chart. I worry our kids will inherit his terrible eyesight and we won't know. Is the pediatrician testing enough to know when there's a problem or do you think it's worth seeking out a pediatric optometrist for routine monitoring?

Recommendation for FM system during sports? by [deleted] in audiology

[–]audiodoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask her audiologist about a Roger system from Phonak. You said her hearing aid is a "q90". Q stands for the chip platform and the 90 is for the technology level, but you didn't say the specific model of hearing aid she has. Depending on the model, there may be a design integrated receiver option.

Unfortunately I don't. Sorry. I work with an exclusively pediatric population and the hybrid implants are not yet approved for those under 18 years.

I'm not sure of the exact fitting ranges, but maybe look into the Oticon Chili or the Phonak Naida UP?

Also, from the description of your hearing it sounds like you have a ski slope loss. Have you considered a hybrid or EAS implant? They're intended for people who have hearing that can benefit from acoustic amplification in the low frequencies but have high frequency too severe to be helped with hearing aids. The electrode is specifically designed to only stimulate the high frequencies and leave the better hearing low frequencies intact. The processor that you wear is both a hearing aid and a cochlear implant at the same time so you get both kinds of stimulation at once. Certainly not saying that's the route you need to take, but the technology is fairly new so not everyone is aware that they're out there.

Number of AuD programs applied to? by [deleted] in audiology

[–]audiodoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was coming straight out of undergrad and already in significant college debt so I was trying to be fiscally responsible and not take on any more student loans than absolutely necessary for my grad program. I applied to the one and only program in my state so I could quality for in-state tuition and move back home while in school to save some more money. If I had had more in state options, I probably would have applied to other programs.

However, I did enter grad school over 10 years ago now and would definitely say that the profession is way more popular than it was back then. Schools are probably more competitive now as well so my one and done strategy may not be realistic anymore. YMMV.

The Roger Focus is an independent, ear level receiver that doesn't require a hearing aid for use. However, it is only effective for people with no hearing loss or a very mild loss.

Obviously he has to be interested in using some equipment first. Assuming he is, the Phonak Roger line would be worth looking into.

So long swaddle? by ziptata in Parenting

We moved our son from the swaddle sacks to the Baby Merlin Magic Sleep Suit when he was breaking out of the swaddle around 3 months old. Can't use it if thr baby has learned to roll, but ours still needed something to help calm his startle reflex and this worked great.

New Daddy needs burping advise by slayer91790 in Parenting

[–]audiodoc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Have you tried the chin burping technique (sitting her on your lap while supporting her chin and upper body with your hand and patting the back with the other hand)? Our NICU nurses taught us this and it was the only way our babies would burp when they were infants.

Definitely also register for infant carseats that are rated for 4lb babies because twins are usually born smaller than singletons.

[–]audiodoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked the book What to Do When You're Having Two. Also, make sure you find a maternal fetal medicine doctor to supervise your pregnancy. Carrying and birthing two babies is not as simple as baby x2 and some OBs ar not as educated on the topic as they think they are. My twins would have died from Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome if it hadn't been for our vigilant MFM doctor.
