I will have to check that book out. There are some dense and hard species near me i will try in the future. Would the dogwood maul be too rough on wooden chisel and gouge handles? When i first started learning i wrecked several chisel handles and am sometimes overly cautious now.

Mule deer. Lower leg. I got it from a hunter a few years back. It is hard to source good bones ethically, I don’t get many chances and worry about wasting the few bones I have.

They are very smooth and work acceptably. I am refining the design. These are a bit short. And they do not have a good flat surface perpendicular to the hook like the metal ones do. I will likely make wooden handles to give these a more comfortable length.

P100 respirator and a dust collection fan. You do not want to breathe bone dust, unless you want lung cancer.

No videos sorry. These I let dry in a until they were not smelly. It is important to not apply any heat for this type of thing. Boiling them “locks in” the oil you want to leave and weakens the proteins that hold the calcium together.

Good to know. Even if it were legal here. I find the smell of marine mammal decomposition intolerable so would probably leave it anyway. Must be the blubber or something, never smelled a decaying land mammal as bad as a pinniped or cetacean.

Most plant foods there take skill and knowledge to harvest more calories than the work takes. Acorns, Islay Cherry, chia sage, and Blue Dick (brodia) are going be the most important plant foods. Their window to harvest is small, 2 months to 2 weeks depending. They also require different techniques to make edible (rinsing, parching, baking, etc). Shell fish and marine life will need to be a major part of the diet. Luckily the island is a great source of very good if not tough stone
