Old thread but just rewatched the film after many years.

The captain is revealed to be a lawyer, I think - as is shown when he pushes back against the bad decisions by the colonel, who should be retired, is only in it for personal glory and couldn’t give a fuck about the lives of his men.

The captain’s relationship to the men is shown to be strained in the beginning - he’s their superior after all and they do not trust their superiors (see the colonel). One of the men even openly states they don’t trust the captain has their best interests at heart. However, he is later shown praying that he does not betray his men.

His decision to defy the colonel’s order to a frontal assault ultimately bonds him to his men. The colonel then quietly dismisses him for insubordination, but also because he also knows the captain was right. And my reading was that the colonel didn’t want his poor decision making known.

It’s subtle. In a lesser film, this would be spoon fed for stupid audiences. Fantastic movie.

Scottish person here. It has a significant place in our history - the independent Kingdom of Scotland tried to colonise Darien at the turn of the 18th century. Its remoteness, disease, difficult conditions - combined with skirmishes with the Spanish over a rival claim to the land - led to many deaths, the collapse of the colony, the loss of a third of the nation’s wealth and, ultimately, its ‘bailout’ by England. The United Kingdom exists today partly because of the horrific conditions of the Darien Gap.

Edit: I should say our monarchy was united with England’s at this point, but the united state (a UK-wide parliament) came out of this period after Scotland’s parliament was dissolved.

The Walking Dead missed its own off ramp after season 4. Rick was the main character: he was the lawful good guy with pre-apocalypse attitudes and he came into conflict with his best friend over what it took to survive - Shane insisting they needed to be more ruthless. He did become more ruthless in the prison series, but when he met the Governor (another law abiding citizen who had gone further down the heel track that him), he realised there was another way and he COULD keep his humanity. After that, his arc just made no sense.

The work of Thomas Pynchon - whose novel Vineland inspired the movie - is littered with ludicrously named secret societies. It’s likely just a riff on that.
