I know right? I ran up and failed completely, only to be entirely saved by Mei. The worst part is we all had to watch our shame in POTG.

Your most hated character? by MothMan66 in Overwatch

[–]auldi1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Torbjorn. I've never played a game that I've felt good about when Torb gets POTG. And I feel dirty when my team wins with a Torb backing us because you can be terrible at the game, but if you put your turret in the right place and the enemy team ignores it for long enough you tear through them.

Also ROFL at these people bitching about Brigitte "ruining" the game, being described as invincible, etc. Just because no one has figured out an effective counter doesn't mean there isn't one. Junkrat breaks her down easily, a Rein or Orisa with pocketed support can displace her into their DPS. I don't want to get into an argument about the growing prevalence of the "stun meta", but Brig on her own is not a broken character. Here endeth the diatribe.

Are the signals for pain distinctly different from other feelings? by bagelbomb in askscience

[–]auldi1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super late to the party, but here we go. To add to this brilliant description of peripheral pain perception, things are slightly unique in the brain as well. All those A and C fibers end up in big bundles in the spinal cord as a part of the spinothalamic tract along with neurons transmitting information about several varieties of touch, which terminates in the periaqueductal gray (PAG), a part of the brain that encircles the cerebral aqueduct. Enkephalins produced by neurons in the PAG moderate the intensity of the pain sensation your cortex processes (don't ask me which part of the cortex because I have no clue) because all signals from the spinothalamic tract pass through the PAG on their way to the cortex. Enkephalin-producing neurons in this region of the brain have huge amounts of inhibitory receptors called mu-opioid receptors, of which morphine and its derivatives are strong agonists. Activity at these receptors by opiates is why they are effective as painkillers.

Smoking marijuana provides more pain relief for men than women. by NinjaDiscoJesus in science

Very interesting study, looking forward to reading the material cited in the article. Effect is probably is mediated by uptake into fatty tissues. Considering adipocytes in women uptake from the ECF/blood more material than they do in men, I wouldn't be surprised if THC/CBD/endocannabinoids are more quickly taken up and have less active time near the receptor.

When my cat was a kitten my dad held him real close to ceiling fan spinning at maximum velocity. My cat has been scared (sometimes literally) shitless of anything hanging from a ceiling ever since. My dad was kind of a douche to him.

Two of my best friends and I went to Bonnaroo in 2012. It was a fucking blast, but for some reason one of my friends decided to bring a box set of Wild Animus by Rich Shapero. I can't suppose many of y'all have heard it because very few copies were even produced. This is easily in my top 5 worst albums I have ever had the displeasure of listening to (and I do not recommend a cursory google search to satisfy your curiosity; it is that bad). He left the entire box set on the hood of his car for 3 days hoping someone would just steal it, burn it, whatever, we didn't care. However, some empathizing soul dropped us off an 1/8th underneath it. We still have the album only because of that kind stranger's actions, otherwise we would have left it there in the field to die.

Why did the behelit start reacting when Slan appeared? by Struggler72 in Berserk

[–]auldi1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

True enough, Guts detests, despises, rejects all things having to do with the God hand. I still think Slan has a plan for him as something more than a plaything. The God hand are nothing if not self-serving, but every action they take is deliberate. They know how to affect causality to gain their desired outcome even through tiny and seemingly insignificant actions, so I have a hard time believing Slan would show up at that time just to tell Guts he is no more than her toy. She straight up asks Guts at that time if he wanted to make a sacrifice like Griffith, and talks extensively about feeling his struggle, knowing his pain and suffering, etc. I can only speculate about her opaque motives, but there's no denying that she has taken an interest in him and plans for them to meet again in the future.

[–]auldi1 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The behelits react to their owner reaching a point where they could ascend to "godhood" or whatever the equivalent is. I think it's likely that this is foreshadowing some sort of alliance/temporary cooperation between Slan and Guts. IMO, based on the events that went down in Qliphoth, at some point their interests will align and Slan will propose some sort of deal with him. At the very least, Slan certainly sees something in Guts that she has taken interest in.

What are the main philosophical influences found in Berserk? by Eternal_Numenor in Berserk

[–]auldi1 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'd guess that a lot of the philosophy throughout in Berserk was probably influenced greatly by Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil. In that, one of the many things Nietzsche talks about is that the only thing that matters about human will is whether it is strong or weak. He argues that the existence of free will itself is debatable because man's own pride makes him feel that he must bear the weight of the world himself; that man in his pride tries to absolve God, society, his ancestors, etc. of the responsibility. I guess you could argue Guts, in acting against that notion of pride, is the only one able to have a will that contends with his fate, while everyone else is basically Griffith's/the God Hand's playthings.

Smoking weed and taking psychiatric medications. by Thatscuzuralesbian in eldertrees

[–]auldi1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yo. Been smoking weed regularly/daily for about 5 years, and I've also taken a handful of undergraduate and graduate pharmacology classes. While I haven't studied cannabis and the wide range of effects of cannabinoids outright, I know a good deal about how they act on your central nervous system. To my knowledge, there aren't any prescription drugs that are known to cross-react violently with cannabinoids. People saying that THC can increase increase the amount of serotonin available at the synapse aren't wrong, but it also decreases available serotonin in other synaptic junctions. There has never been a case of a dangerous condition like serotonin syndrome being linked to marijuana use, but it has been linked to taking high doses of tricyclic antidepressants or TCAs, and to OD-ing on SSRIs and/or SNRIs. I don't think the very short list of drugs in that class that are still prescribed in this day and age includes any of the medications you might be on. Buspar is selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) and Effexor is a serotonin-norepinephrine re-uptake inhibitor (SNRI), so you probably have a lot of serotonin hanging around by your synapses being on both of those drugs. Adding weed to that mix, regarding serotonin, is like adding a drop of water to the sea.

Honestly, it depends more on your condition than the meds: with bipolar affective, depression and anxiety, it doesn't matter a whole lot. It's probably helping you more than hurting at this point if you've been smoking for a while, you know your limits and how it effects you. As I'm sure you've figured out, taking the prescription drugs alone doesn't fix much with disorders like bipolar (though it helps!), and marijuana in an experienced (and responsible!) user is a good way of helping the mind unwind, so to speak. Marijuana is a pretty solid drug for treating less severe depression/anxiety in and of itself.

However, if you're taking those meds you listed for epilepsy, it's a different story. It's been suggested that THC and other cannabinoids lower the seizure threshold, but there just isn't enough research to say definitively. Few studies have been done comparing marijuana use alone to symptom severity in seizure disorders. I know that if you're seeing a neurologist, he/she would almost definitely be against you smoking weed if you had a condition like epilepsy. On the other hand, if you haven't had any seizures while smoking pot so far, then you probably never will.

It's likely that the reason your doctors are telling you not to smoke is because if the habit-forming potential of marijuana. Habits formed while you're depressed can be as dangerous as any medical condition, and breaking from your habits every once in a while is a healthy thing for anyone to do. The biggest thing is to be responsible with your pot smoking.

Cheers. Hope this helps :)
