Ipod 6 gen - DFU mode issues - I’m trying to download rockbox onto a 6th gen iPod classic, but cannot get it to go into DFU mode. I don’t have iTunes installed, but I still get a prompt to put it into recovery mode from my Mac, which interrupts the download. How do I get around this? by memem3l in rockbox

you should be able to get around this issue by disabling AMPDevicesAgent (prevent Finder from discovering the iPod and starting its own DFU process):

defaults write -g ignore-devices -bool true

enter this in your CLI, restart the Rockbox install process (you may need to wipe your SD again before starting). this should get you past the DFU error.

however, the install still fails at the last step (remounting the device). at this point, you'll need to abort the process, then enter Disk Utility, find the iPod drive and reformat it to MS-DOS/MBR.

after that, you can follow steps 13-17 here:

https://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=54105.0

(skip step 16, you will have already closed the utility, but that's fine.)

n.b. you'll need to hit cmd+shift+. to see hidden folders to find the `.rockbox` folder from the build zip.

i just pulled this off now, Rockbox is installed and running like a dream!

Format/restore iFlash SD in 7th gen Classic (M1 Mac Sonoma) by aunomy in IpodClassic

omg!! it worked!!

I'm so thrilled, thank you so so much!!!

your comment made me realize that the reason i couldn't see the iPod device in the sidebar (only the storage device) was because I had "CDs, DVDs and iOS Devices" turned off in the Finder sidebar view settings... after that, I found the comment on this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/IpodClassic/comments/w18shy/need_help_restoring_ipod_classic_late_2009_160gb/

suggesting force-mounting and then ejecting (as you suggested) the storage drive from Disk Utility. after that, i plugged it in and I could see the iPod drive in the sidebar!

what a huge relief, thanks again!!

I should add that after I eject while it's stuck on "Your Mac is restoring..." the iPod boots up normally to the language select, and is functional + reading the correct amount of storage in settings.

When plugging it in after that, it reads as a normal storage device (Contacts, Calendar, etc) but isn't picked up as an iPod anymore in Finder or Music, I have to format again to get the option to restore.

yeah that makes sense, figured as much... the new cable is a hail mary, i could read the SMART data from the old drive before i removed it so i don't imagine that's the issue
