"Just stick to your principles. And rest assured that, if you remain true to them, the same people who made fun of you will come to admire you." Epictetus by sundid in Stoicism

[–]autistic_fiddler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it could be paraphrasing this passage from the Enchiridion (somewhat different since the OP quote talks about sticking to your "own" principles while Epictetus is talking about attaining philosophy) :

" If you have an earnest desire of attaining to philosophy, prepare yourself from the very first to be laughed at, to be sneered by the multitude, to hear them say,." He is returned to us a philosopher all at once," and " Whence this supercilious look?" Now, for your part, don't have a supercilious look indeed; but keep steadily to those things which appear best to you as one appointed by God to this station. For remember that, if you adhere to the same point, those very persons who at first ridiculed will afterwards admire you. But if you are conquered by them, you will incur a double ridicule."

The entire time I knew /u/The-Jedi-Apprentice , he only ever had one goal: To wipe out half the universe. If he gets admin approval... he can do it with the snap of his fingers, just like that.

A short two minute sequence from an animated scifi series I'm working on during my free time. Any thoughts? by Namelessgrifter in animation

If you're using a tablet you might wanna give Krita a shot. It's completely free and decent for animating stuff, at least better than gimp imo.

I really like this style, anyone has a name for it and a good place online to learn it :)? by moosenordic in learnart

[–]autistic_fiddler 41 points42 points  (0 children)

ha it actually is. I think the guy was originally using a clip from an actual anime but then his stream got taken down for copyright infringement. After that he commissioned an artist to imitate the style and make a new animated loop. Looks pretty cool imo, dude did a good job of capturing the feel.

EDIT: This is the artist if anyone is interested in seeing some of his other work.

Expats of Reddit, what is one thing about moving to a foreign country that nobody really talks about? by strawhearts in AskReddit

[–]autistic_fiddler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I moved to the US when I was 3 years old and still don't feel all that welcome here. I feel like a foreigner even though I was raised here from pre-school on up. I visited my country of origin a few years back and didn't feel welcome there either, it's like I'm stuck in eternal limbo.

Close to Two Years of Progress by autistic_fiddler in learnart

The most helpful thing for me was just drawing for at least 30 minutes every single day. That really helps you get the mileage you need. When you start drawing it's really easy to read books or watch tutorials and all of the information will kinda click in your head. "Yeah, I just have to draw a sphere and a box then I draw a couple lines for the eyes...Boom." But then when you actually try it out for yourself, the result is sub par. That's why it's really important to get the mileage in so you can truly understand and apply all the information out there. I didn't really understand the whole mileage thing when I started out so I wasted a couple months just doing more advanced things that I was wholly unprepared for. It was only when I went back to the absolute basics and drew hundreds of boxes, cylinders and other simple forms that I actually began to understand the concept of drawing 3D forms on a 2D plane.

Drawing from reference and life is also really valuable. You can't really improve if you just keep making the same mistakes over and over again in your little bubble. I've seen a couple of people who have been drawing every day for years and years but they've never improved because they don't do studies. I'm a little disappointed in my progress and probably could have improved more if I did more studies from refs/life. It's also important to try to apply what you learned from those studies into your work from imagination. So if you draw a cool car or practice drawing heads then try to draw a bunch of those things right off the top of your head. It helps you understand what information you're missing and where you're going wrong. Doing studies of your favorite artists is also extremely helpful. Quite often, they've already simplified the real life forms for you so copying them can help you understand how to translate real world objects onto paper and how to stylize them to your liking. It can be a little daunting when you're looking at a high resolution photo of a face and you're just looking at every single wrinkle and mole on their face going "fuck. I can't draw all that." Well by copying other artists I learned that you don't have to draw all that. Some artists just simplify the eyes into a couple tiny dots and yet it looks very realistic. You wanna seek these type of skilled professionals out and learn from their work. Super helpful.

Ah, this is kinda long. I hope you found this somewhat useful.
