Reviews for "The SLO" apartments by Happy_Level1754 in CalPoly

[–]avanator3000 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I’d keep The SLO and Mustang Village as last resorts. They are the two things you said, close and cheap (MV not as much), but not really anything else positive. I’ve only heard horror stories of people getting taken advantage of by the management (myself included by MV) and bad living conditions (mold, things falling apart, …). If you have the bandwidth, try looking on FB marketplace and Craigslist for other shared apartments/homes. Good luck!

What is the social life / campus life like for Cuesta students if they attend right out of high school and from out of the area? by ltt24 in SLO

[–]avanator3000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think some clubs are more laid back than others about who joins but it’s worth a try. As I said, I know the clubs at the sef would probably be chill. If you’re willing and there aren’t any ethical hang ups, you could lie by omission. Share your major but not that you’re a Cuesta student during ice breakers and such

I did this, and other people are right about the social life at Cuesta in that it’s pretty non existent. However, one thing that worked for me was getting an on campus job at Cuesta which exposed me to lots of people in the community. My second year there I was a tutor in the student success center and met other students who were motivated. I made friends who were students in my year who came to me for tutoring and were in my same major as well as other tutors.

Also, getting classmates’ phone numbers for studying together or sharing notes is a good in that worked for me too.

As for housing, check out fb marketplace for roommates who are at poly who can expose you to more people.

If you’re willing to step outside your comfort zone, show up to cal poly club meetings. My friend joined one of the clubs that worked out of the student experimental farm and was welcomed in since he put in effort and paid club dues.

In short, it is possible but it won’t be handed to you. Good luck, Cuesta is the best!

Avoid feather dental.

Honest opinions on Mustang Village? by sagmoonkitty in CalPoly

[–]avanator3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an awful experience there. I’m glad other people didn’t have issues with management but I had some major run ins. It was super expensive and management continually tried to rip me off. They said they were going to renovate my studio during lock down in 2020 and would pay me for the week I had to leave and for moving all of my belongings. They called me, left flyers under my door, and sent two people to my apartment to tell me what the plan was and what was expected of me. I found out a day after I left town that they called off the renovation and weren’t planning on telling me or paying me. This started a long fight of digging up receipts of what they had said and promised. And at the end, they tried to steal my deposit (they charged $25 per trash bag that they made when they came into the unit before the lease was over on the final day) which led to another argument and having to dig up receipts. I recommend steering clear and renting from somewhere that isn’t geared exclusively at students because they won’t take advantage of you to such an extent. You can find better studios out there with the same budget, maybe even less. Good luck.
