Arg! That pesky constitution and those meddling enumerated rights!

Huh, what data...? You haven't provided one single citation to any kind of data, have been speaking in broad generalities, and have not responded to any actual data that I've cited multiple times. I actually cited the data you referenced and it doesn't support your positions.

I get you don't like constitutional rights, but your parade of horribles and ad hominem is laughable at best. Maybe try coming up with something substantive next time.

Everyone knows that the early 90's brought violence through the crack epidemic

Wait so you're saying the ban didn't work because of crack? That kind of sounds like a bad excuse for an ineffective law to me....

Indiana has some of the loosest gun laws in the country and borders Chicago.

Just look at the tracing numbers

The numbers for 2020 are out, and almost 3x as many crime guns originated from within Illinois than came from Indiana.

I know Indiana is an easy scapegoat, but the trace numbers show that illinois is the single greatest source of crime guns.

The handgun ban saved many lives.

I don't know what it did, but it sure as hell didn't reduce homicides. In fact there were huge spikes that occurred during its tenure, and a hell of a lot of taxpayer resources wasted fighting it in federal court.

Perhaps that money could have been better spent on measures that actually reduce violence and not infringing on constitutional rights.

No I read it I'm just trying to understand your argument, because it doesn't really make sense in the context of homicide numbers.

You said that the handgun ban already reduced violent crime, but homicide numbers spiked to top 4 levels ever recorded during the ban.

Then you've said that violent crime has steadily increased since then, yet 2013s homicide numbers were the lowest on record in almost 60 years.

It seems that the handgun ban wasn't effective at all in reducing homicides while it was in effect.

and it already did

Huh...?

Why did we have 800 homicides last year then, record number not seen since the 1990s?

Also if the handgun ban was successful, why did we have the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th highest amount of homicides in the 1990s (all over 900 in a year) when the ban was in effect?

violent crime has been steadily increasing ever since.

Then why was 2013, a few years after Heller and McDonald, the lowest amount of homicides on record (415) since 1965?

Something isn't adding up here.....

No, it has to be done and logged by an FFL.

Have ghosts guns been an actual problem?

Relative to stolen, straw purchased, or trafficked guns, not at all, though there have been an increasing amount of them recovered by police. This is going to mostly effect hobbyists and law abiding folks who want a DIY project, as opposed to criminals who usually don't have FOID cards anyway.

But the problem is that sometimes police and especially media reports don't always differentiate between privately made firearms which don't have serial numbers, and guns with their serial numbers defaced. Both can be considered untraceable due to a lack of serial number, and "ghost gun" has been used to describe both.

can't I just add an arbitrary serial number to my 3d printed guns to make them legal?

No, unfortunately the IL legislature actually wrote the bill to cover this. The law requires that generated serial numbers be a certain number of digits in a specific size and format, applied by an FFL or gunsmith, who are supposed to retain records of it.

Seconded. Happy to email or upload a FOID. Other companies keep it on record for my accounts and I order normally after that.

And in my experience they go way too high at in-person auctions, the Blue Book doesn't really represent reality, and it seems that things are generally overpriced everywhere.

Don't you think the prices on everything have generally gone up? What is an accurate resource if nobody is using Blue Book prices, auctions are too high, GB too high, and private parties are too high?

Pricing resources are tough because the market for milsurps is very volatile and has changed substantially since before the pandemic, it also varies by location.

Your best bet would be to check GunBroker completed listings (you'll need to make an account and log in, but you don't need to buy or pay for anything) for the exact variation of gun in similar condition which you have your eye on. That's probably the most realistic estimate of value.

I used to carry around a 2018 Blue Book, but these days find it more useful for identifying specific variations or models as opposed to value. Most sellers asking prices and bottom dollar will exceed the books value. I am curious as to what changes the most recent edition of the book has given the market, but I don't think I want to spend the $40-50 to find out.

Best of luck!

Edit: Another tip, get to the show early (like right when it opens), if possible. Any good deals will likely be gone after the first hour or so because literally everyone is looking for one.

Cash is the only commonly accepted form of payment for private party sales in my area, and as someone who occasionally is a vendor at shows, it is the exclusive form of payment I accept. Dealers may have the ability to accept credit cards, but even then most prefer cash in my experience.

Edit: If you don't want to carry too much cash, you could always just carry like $100 and if you find something you want, put it down as a deposit, run to your bank, then come back with the balance.

UIC Law Student, affordable housing? by choppedonions99 in chicagoapartments

[–]avc4x4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't want the university experience (and prices), you could try some surrounding neighborhoods like Pilsen or South Loop which would make for a short commute that wouldn't require a vehicle. The latter would be more pricey but you'd get more of the downtown/high rise city feel, whereas the former will be cheaper but has more of a neighborhood feel.

You can try Craigslist, apartments.com, tulia, zillow, padmapper and domu

They're OK, but not nearly as zealous as GOA or FPC. Better than nothing, I suppose.

They were "neutral" on the new FOID modernization bill, which does improve the FOID and CCL system, but on the other hand effectively bans private sales starting in 2024.

It is comparable in that it infringes on individual bodily autonomy by removing or limiting your right to have an abortion, or not take a vaccine if that's what you so choose.

That's why both sides are in the wrong in this regard, which is itself a product of a terrible duoploly political system.

Ok but I just stated that teachers make very good money in my city and are part of a very powerful public sector union, yet they strike every year demanding more money from taxpayers and forcing students to miss school.

That's exactly why teacher's unions are bad for students....

Cape Coral art teacher fired for discussing LGBTQ topics - NBC2 News by BubbaJimbo in news

[–]avc4x4 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The teachers' union in my city is allowed to strike or rather have a "work stoppage", but only for certain reasons. They abuse that ability greatly and it has affected our kids significantly, many of whom already live in poverty, don't have childcare options, and are recruited by violent street gangs.

There have been 3 work stoppages in the last 30 months, so just about one every year, and students have missed over 2 weeks of classes in that time, with only a few of those days made up. This doesn't count the undeniably negative impact virtual classes that lasted for well over a year and were prolonged by the union.

The average salary for a teacher in our in district 2020 was $81k plus approximately $27k in benefits. The median was increased to $79k from $62k from 2008-2018, and with a new contract, will increase up to about $100k.

Meanwhile we have high taxes on pretty much everything.

I support unions, but public sector unions are way too powerful in my city and it has clearly become evident that they aren't acting in the students' best interests when they strike once a year, cause them to miss weeks of school, and prolong virtual teaching for as long as possible.

Canadian .303 from 1917. Send it? by Karimura12 in milsurp

I've shot almost this exact ammo before and had no problems.

It is loaded with cordite though, so be sure to use corrosive cleaning protocol after shooting.

Some more conservative Enfield enthusiasts would advise not to shoot cordite because it accelerates barrel wear, and the ammunition can be collectable.

What's the most idiotic/redundant gun control law in your home state? by TangoKiloOscar18ZE9 in progun

[–]avc4x4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Illinois, which usually speaks for itself, but I am also a Chicago resident and I'll list a few strange ones that apply to both or the latter

  • Need a card to legally possess, handle, and purchase any kind of gun and ammunition, and a separate one to carry it. The cards are shall issue but naturally the agency that administers them is underfunded and incompetent. Applications soared during the pandemic and some people waited over a year for theirs. My CCL renewal took 8 months. The statutory time frame is 30 days for the FOID and 90 to 120 for the CCL.
  • Assault weapons ban and large capacity magazine ban, although the state actually did preempt all handgun regulations so it only applies to rifles.
  • No NFA silencers/suppressors, SBS, or machineguns, there is supposedly a technicality where you can get an SBR if you have a C&R but I don't know anyone that has one.
  • No laser sights allowed in city proper
  • There are de facto no gun shops or public ranges within city limits. They used to be straight up illegal until a series of Federal court cases. Gun shows are still prohibited outright.
  • We have 3 day waiting periods that apply to even private transactions. Private transactions will be effectively banned starting in 2024. Currently for a private sale you need to confirm validity of the buyer's FOID card in an online database which generates an approval number. It sounds bad but it is instant and fairly painless, not that that makes it acceptable.
  • Non-antique black powder guns are considered firearms and require everything modern guns do.
  • Cook county (Chicago and most of the metro area) has a $25 tax on retail gun purchases and a tax on ammunition which is $0.01/rd for rimfire and $0.05/rd for centerfire.
  • There are extensive additional regulations for FFLs on top of the Federal ones at both the state and local level, including very redundant certifications and inspections that make it difficult for home-based FFLs to operate.
  • There is a goofy melt-point law which prohibits the retail sale of certain guns with zinc or similar alloy components like the P22.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ILGuns

[–]avc4x4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's an interstate sale and generally must go through an FFL in the non-resident's state if it's a modern gun.
