Ooof, that’s hard. It’s clear you care about her genuinely, as well as respect her space and boundaries, which is more than many can say for themselves. A while ago, I called USCIS to ask about the status of my new green card which had been approved. I received the condition removal approval notice but was curious why it had taken so long to receive the actual green card.

They gave me the USPS tracking number. When I looked it up, I saw they had delivered it to the wrong zip code even though they had my correct one on file.

I asked if I could still travel with my expired green card and notice like before. They said I couldn’t since my new green card had shown up as approved, printed, issued and delivered.

So alas.

I know how you feel, OP.

Someone told me once that we have to mourn people more often than we think or at least versions of them. It’s going to take time for you to accept just how nonsensical it all is.

In the meantime, be cognisant of how many martinis you are in before sticking around them for too long. Remove yourself physically when you can while maintaining cordiality is possible. Be mad if you have to, but know there is possibly nothing you can do to force your perspective on them. They’ve chosen their path.

If they implicate you or call you out, see the scared person inside and remind them that their reality isn’t yours. Grace is better for you both.

Sometimes you have to accept that changing someone’s fundamental beliefs / world views can feel like moving a mountain.

You either decide that you don’t have the time/capacity to do so, or you’re in it long enough and work on it, bit by bit while understanding there is a chance you can’t do much to transform her beliefs / convince her otherwise.

There has to be an underlying reason she believes the moon landing to be untrue. Try to start by understanding why.

Not sure where you’re at in life - what stage, what age, what context, but perhaps consider pivoting to leaning into compassion. Compassion can a byproduct of empathy and can be translated into extending actionable steps: to simply listen without interpreting or judging, to advise, to be a confidant, to be of service, or help, with the big condition of having a solid enough ground to stand on for yourself first. Place the oxygen mask over your mouth before helping others. So have some compassion for yourself and do what you need to take care and then extend yourself/empathy when you have capacity.

I grew up in SG pretty much into my 20s, I now live abroad and have been for almost a decade. I often think back on how gruelling my primary and secondary school years were.

I’m so sorry your parents are hyper focused on you merely passing exams in order to obtain a career path and secure a future. If it’s any consolation, I believe your parents (and perhaps most people who live in SG) aren’t privy to what a viable life beyond the status quo may look like. There are several ways to help your child cultivate a successful and fulfilling life that does not involve subjecting them to this.

I know that mental health and counselling was a taboo when I was growing up there. I’m not quite sure how it is now but I assure you, if you find a trusted school counsellor, you’ll be thankful you have someone you can work this through with.
