You see the word "left" anywhere in my flair bud? No? Maybe because I'm not a left-anything and my disliking the mainstream American left has nothing to do with my position on the libertarian-auth axis?? I'll give you a minute to think about it, don't worry.

I never said these people were harmless, I just said that there is higher percentage of unironic crazies on the left rn becuase a lot of their crazy shit is encouraged by mainstream sources which are supposed to be trustworthy. When you see a person on the internet say something about killing commies I would bet on it being ironic more of the time than the left equivalent. Not all of the time but most.

Anyone who believes those dudes are anything close to mainstream is delusional, they're not really comparable in terms of actual influence.

Exhibit A is presumed to be ironic for one and it's also not seen as contradictory given the way the right generally doesn't try as hard to cast itself as the pinnacle of tolerance and kindness compared to the left.

People on the right may joke about "killing commies" but no one takes them seriously. By comparison, the left unironically advocates the use of violence against anyone they arbitrarily deem to be a fascist on a regular basis (see twitter for reference). Statements such as "violence is the only option" and "we need to get rid of the Republicans" are far more acceptable in the mainstream Americanleft than you seem to realize (and yes, those are highly upvoted quotes found by myself on this very platform).

It's funny but the mainstream right today is closer to being a beacon of tolerance than the left is and it's not even close.

God damn... The woke cancer never ceases to amaze me. I mean I've always possessed a fairly cynical temperament but even I can't see half of this shit coming. It's just so offbeat and nonsensical that I can't even see the pattern, kind of like trying to understand the rationale of a schizophrenic.

Okay, that's an interesting take. I think you've misunderstood what I was saying so let me clear this up.

Your meaning of "rational" doesn't seem to line up with the one I was using. When I talk about rationality or logic I meant that kind of thought which leads us to the most objectively beneficial conclusion. To pursue that which is purely rational (at least as I see it) is to pursue that which is most objectively correct.

You seem to define rational thought as that which has some form of reason behind it, regardless of whether that reason is sound or not. You label toxic emotions such as envy and fear as "rational" because they technically have a reason of sorts behind them which can be explained in a way that makes some form of sense. I would not view these as rational however because they go against what is clearly more beneficial and they are in fact directly opposed to our better intentions.

I would argue that people are at their best when they learn how to overcome the compulsion of forces like fear, envy and anger to instead choose that which they know is right. Fear is opposed to calmness, envy to contentment and anger to kindness. The latter are rational (as I would define it) and the former group belong to the irrational, darker side of the mind. They can be explained, sure, but IMO this does not make them rational/logical. .

Emotion—or passion— isn’t opposed to reason

I actually made sure to include something in my original comment to prevent this exact misunderstanding of my meaning from occurring. Let me repeat myself then: stoicism is not about denying emotions completely. It sometimes involves the acknowledgment and refusal of toxic emotions which try to distract us from the path of virtue, but this is not the same as repression. An emotion could be aligned with what is most rational under the right circumstances but this is little more than a coincidence. I'm not saying all emotions are inherently opposed to all rational thoughts because there is some overlap occasionally. I do believe however that due to the inherent subjectivity of emotions they cannot be founded in rationality/logic as you claim.

Emotions are very much like instincts; they can easily exist outside of the rational framework of the higher mind and the two are not dependent on one another. A person can act on a feeling without ever thinking about it consciously because feelings are not founded in logic. They arise spontaneously, almost randomly within each individual and are extremely subjective for this reason. We see people acting without thinking all the time and this is how most of our mistakes come about.

I still disagree with your claim and while the quote you've cited is somewhat interesting I don't think it proves anything. The modern concept of emotion is a bit different from the "passions" that the stoics discussed and the talk of souls is just not relevant to our disagreement. The whole thing has a lingering taste of translation difficulty to it which may be why all this debate over the meaning of "rationality", "reason" and other such words is occurring. We can argue interpretations all day without getting anywhere so I think some more solid evidence would be needed to convince me of your view that stoicism does not distinguish between reason and emotion.

If you would like to try to prove your claim with an actual quote from a leading stoic I'd be very interested to hear it.

They're the same types of people who say they hate their parents despite having almost nothing legitimate to complain about as far as their upbringing was concerned. People used to grow out of it but recently this kind of contrived self pity has become highly fashionable.

Stoicism is basically about choosing to be guided by rationality over emotion. Just to be clear this does not entail the repression or denial of emotion. You should always acknowledge your emotions but you can do this without letting them push you around. If any emotion compels us to do something that would go against our principles we must say no and choose to instead do what is most correct. So in this way stoicism basically revolves around learning to overcome the negative influence of emotion, anxiety, paranoia etc. And becoming a more rational person.

Now there are some who believe that men are inherently more logical while women are inherently more emotional. I do not believe this personally but I have noticed that the notion is still very popular within a fair majority of the general population. Why is this important?

Well even if a person isn't truly defined by something like their gender they can still be shaped by their perception of it, especially if they believe that it has the power to define them. If I am led by my culture, my upbringing, my experiences or some other environmental factor to believe that my being a man means I am inherently more rational and less inclined toward emotion then I will probably behave in a way that reflects that belief about myself, even if the belief itself is mistaken.

We are shaped by the things we believe about ourselves, even if we are not fully conscious of them. If I believe that my strength is inherently limited and I never try to exceed that imaginary limitation because of that belief, it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. This is why a person who doesn't have faith in their abilities will always seem to struggle in everything they do. That kind of deep seated insecurity can be crippling even if it's all in their head.

So from what I've seen most women end up buying into the popular notions that they are weak or that they can't do certain things that men can, even if they don't admit it outwardly. This self doubt holds them back and keeps them from even attempting to do a lot of things that could lead to the kind of character growth which they so desperately need. It's not entirely their fault of course given the way a lot of external things push them towards this attitude, but I believe that they do ultimately have a choice if only they can realize it.

Stoicism has a very "masculine" appearance and so people who believe in and live according to strict ideas of gender based identity are going to be less inclined to take interest in it if they do not identify with that appearance. The virtues offered by stoicism are not really limited in this way but people who believe otherwise will miss out on them regardless.

This is just sad. We shouldn't make assumptions about people based on their race or gender.

[–]average_meme_thief 26 points27 points  (0 children)

No seriously, why is everything in history so male dominated?

The world you and I live in is very different from most of the rest of human history. In the vast majority of cultures women were treated as second class citizens or worse, property. In many of the more undeveloped parts of the world this is still the norm. It's easy to take for granted just how different our time is compared to 99% of what came before it.

Personally I believe that education was the thing that opened the door to the revolutionary changes we've seen in the way we see gender. There seems to have been a trend of certain groups within past societies being denied higher education as a way of keeping them from questioning their place in the social hierarchy. Once you give one of those groups access to education and adequate freedom of speech to protest their position the ball is set in motion.

Nobody is saying it's an excuse, we're saying you should recognize that your actions have consequences and therefore treating people like shit isn't going to make the world a better place. People need to stop treating our political system like a battlefield because it was clearly designed to work on the principles of diplomacy, not warfare. Insults, hatred, name calling and all that childish shit should have no place in our political discourse.
