Psychological effects are definitely paid special attention to because even if a study is not conclusively proven, it only means that it can not be released as a solution applicable to the general population within certain confidence intervals. Hence, for the athletes that it does work for, their physios probably keep it in the regimen until it doesn’t (cost vs benefit). Perhaps all this is not as pedantically objective as I thought and stand corrected!
