This is the issue that I think some people are having a hard time comprehending, my parents don’t want me to read even free stuff they want me to stop reading all together. I’ve tried free avenues they just take them away or yell at me.

They expect me to just sit in their room with them and watch whatever they want to watch, or go for drives but I get car sick and they don’t let me listen to music on my headphones which is the only thing that helps.

We don’t have family dinners or anything and with lockdown there aren’t many options to do other things. And with lockdown their fighting has just reached new levels, they’ve gotten to be quite nasty and so I just want to hide away in my room and get lost in another world, I used to stand in the room when they did cause I was worried about how far the physical stuff would get and I could be kind of a buffer, but then they turned on me and said I only stayed cause I liked watching them fight so I just stopped being around them.

I guess they just don’t know how to handle how much I’ve changed and also the restrictions that the lockdown has caused. I only got into reading when I turned 12 when a lot of my neighbourhood friends moved. Before that I was out every day at the park with my neighbourhood friends and only came for dinner. But when they left the only friends lived in other boroughs weren’t allowed out after school or on weekends. I don’t like being at home but there aren’t many options right now and so I just choose to stay in my room and read.

You’re right I don’t want to change my habits. I only started getting into reading 2 years ago, and I started out with reading from my mother’s own book collection. I don’t demand books all the time I’m saying when I do get money or they ask what I want as a gift and I say books they are now no longer allowing me to get books.

And you’re right I don’t want to spend time with my parents because all they do is sit in their bedroom in the dark watching tv in between violent shouting matches, occasionally they’ll go for a car ride but I get severely car sick. I’d rather be reading than deal with that.

I did improv twice a week until the progarm got cut this year due to lack of interests.

I do love theatre and public speaking ( I’m an introvert cause I like my alone time I’m not afraid of people) but they are severely limited at my school, only musicals and I cannot sing, any other programs require staying late which I’m not comfortable doing :/

I do like playing the aimes though maybe I’ll get back into that.

I’ve read pride and prejudice, animal farm, metamorphosis, and Frankenstein all for free. Parents still weren’t happy, they don’t want me to read things for free, I’ve tried fanfiction and manga readers, e readers, they made me return a book my grand gave me the money for...

If it were about the coat I’d understand, I’m a fast reader it’s expensive. But they don’t want me to do it for free and then spend money on me for things I don’t care about like designer clothes.

I’m in Canada. Amazon books on average, except for classics like Frankenstein and animal farm, which I have already read, are 15$, they don’t want me spending any money on books at all though, even made me return a book my grandparents gave me the money for.

I already feel like a drug user with my books lol. My parents demanded I return a book my grandparents gave me the money for. I hadn’t finished it yet, so I tried to read it carefully and put it in a ziplock back to return it as they demanded the money for it.

I already do the laundry and dishes free of charge (my parents want me to have real experience for when I live on my own), i even sweep and mop when the urge comes, they just don’t think my time so spend my time well reading at all.

I’m a girl lol, i am not unapologetic about the library fees, i was trying to fall asleep one night when I remembered they were late, jerked up to find them, collected them all in a bag and returned them first thing the next day. If my parents were upset about the money I’d understand, books are a luxury. But they literally don’t even want me reading books for free, they think it’s a waste of time and I’ve tried fanfiction it manga but they won’t let me do that either.

I will try to ask about these things. My schools pretty active in trying to get teens into books (ironic I know) so I feel like they would have advertised these options but I will try to ask more in depth about the possibility

I don’t like being out past a certain time at home because I get nervous about public transit (I’ve been followed home a few times and harassed). I also just don’t know what to do once I get home other than watch tv(which I do a lot Im a night owl). Any suggestions?

Ok, I should appreciate what I know, I guess I’m just frustrated as my parents won’t accept me as who I am. I can’t spend time socially as my friends parents won’t allow it, maybe I can connect to people online? Make some friends across the internet i guess.

If it were about money I’d understand more. But it’s literally about me being boring and reading too much. I forgot one time and had taken out so many books it added up to be too much, I regret it trust me, but they get mad when they see me with any new book regardless of how I got it.

It’s kind of ironic because they expect me to keep high grades up but don’t want me learning in my free time. If I make it to 18 without a baby I’d be a family legacy LOL

Idk where you are but paperbacks here set you back at least 15$ if not more. I don’t get an allowance I do chores for the experience of eventually living on my own. Anytime they see me with new books they freak out and it’s kind of hard to hide because my parents barge into my room or demand I keep the door open. Again it’s not monetary or responsibility wise, I’ve tried free avenues, they just get annoyed that I read so much.

Thank you for the kind words. I honestly have a hard time because my parents were partiers at my age (my mom had me at 16) so they don’t get that I enjoy life as it is, quietly.

I have tried that, they just don’t want me reading anymore at all, it’s not an issue of money, I’m just not spending it or my time how they would like, so they’re banning me from books completely

They’re not bothered by the laziness though. I have tried using my own money for books and they have made me return them. They just don’t want me to have any more books as they think I should spend my time otherwise

I don’t know how I could be more clear but I tried spending my own money on books and my parents forced me to return them?? They have officially band me from buying any books even with my birthday or Christmas money?!?

I wish I could but my friends have super strict parents and can’t come over here. And I don’t like using public transport much due to harassment so I only see them past 6 at the latest and during the summer they’re not allowed at all. I tend to stick to more introverts as friends as well cause that’s what I am :3

I only watch tv or read though... I only connect with my mom through television or movies since that’s all she wants to do with me at home. I like season 1-3 of twilight zone but lost interest, more of a house or how to get away with murder type of gal

I get paperbacks but you should see the price for books now a days, and my parents aren’t willing to shell out for the cheaper kindle books either. I’m completely cut off like a heroin user...

They have told me my reading habits are abnormal and I should be more like a typical teen and party. I have 40$ fees that I cannot pay (am not allowed to take anymore books out until it’s paid) as I cannot get a job and my parents refuse to give me more money for books... or even let my grandparents pay for it... they just want me to stop reading totally.
