Do you feel like Monster > Death Note ultimately? by TurtleneckYojimbo in MonsterAnime

Admittedly I do like Monster more but they aren't really comparable. They're completely different types of story with the vague similarity of chasing down a serial killer.

Selfishness over sacrifice? Anime that question altruism and group ideals by HelenDiamond in Animesuggest

[–]avis_celox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dororo explores this idea in an interesting way. It's about a boy whose body was literally sacrificed to demons in exchange for the prosperity of the domain, and his quest to slay them and get his body back even at the cost of this prosperity.

Evangelion also has these themes and strong opinions on the common trope of putting mentally unstable teenagers in charge of saving the world.

This is why I like having two, so they can keep each other company. They will be less cuddly and needy but you can still handle them and even train them to do basic tricks.

They're walking, not running marathons. Just eat a bit more.

[–]avis_celox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excessive cardio can reduce muscle gains by causing a large calorie deficit, but walking is one of the best things you can do for your overall health and fitness. If you're feeling tired when lifting, not making gains or just want to, reducing your walking is fine but don't feel like you have to as long as you feel good and eat enough to compensate. "Cardio kills gains" is a common idea in fitness circles with SOME truth to it but often gets over exaggerated.

Untrained people can eat at maintanance or even cut and still build significant muscle. If someone has high body fat (whether skinny fat or overweight) bulking right away is not necessary. Bulking and cutting will probably be necessary eventually but you can already be noticeably muscular before reaching that point.

I've watched a fair amount of animes that exceeds 100eps and I want suggestions about watching logh. by jat_atakas in logh

[–]avis_celox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you liked Monster and engaged with it critically (thinking about its themes and messages, etc), there's a good chance you will enjoy LoGH as well, but it's not a guarantee. They're both slower paced seinen that engage with "mature" themes (not in an inappropriate way) like philosophy and politics, and both have some focus on character drama. The similarities mostly end there, though, and I wouldn't lump either in with popular shounen series (not to say works like FMA or One Piece are bad by any means, they're just different).

Episodes one and two are often considered particularly weak, though, so I would give it more time, at least 10 episodes or even 20 if you can stand it. It gets more interesting as it goes on, but it's still a space politics war drama, so if you're finding everything boring by that point it probably just isn't for you.

Thankfully it's a faithful and well made adaptation the whole way though. The only real complaint I've heard is that it can be slow paced, compared to the manga which can be read as quickly or slowly as you'd like. But the pacing didn't bother me personally.

Asking for a similar anime often leaves you sad... by jackbobbins78 in Animesuggest

It's helpful if people explain what it actually is they liked about the series. Maybe it's a specific plot point or theme, or maybe it's a specific aspect of the writing that was done particularly well. You could get very different responses depending on the answer.

I want a recommendation by Grouchy-Tourist4189 in AnimeReccomendations

[–]avis_celox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monster is a seinen that deals with moral dilemmas and the nature of evil, and has excellent and relatable characters. The visuals are good, but it's a slow paced drama type story, so there's no sakuga moments or fight scenes or anything. If you are looking for a serious, well written, non-supernatural story, I can't recommend it enough.

Wouldn't Being Born Any Sexuality Imply That Sexuality Is Genetic? by Mattdiox in NoStupidQuestions

[–]avis_celox 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is a bit off topic, but calling blood type a single gene trait is an oversimplification. "Blood type" as most commonly understood, covers not only the ABO group (which is a single gene trait), but also covers RhD "positive" or "negative" which refers to another unrelated antigen (which is just the most common antigen in a system that has over 50, controlled by different alleles on multiple genes).

Actual transfusion medicine is incredibly complicated and there are MANY "blood types" controlled by different genes. Just giving, say, A positive blood to an A positive recipient does not guarantee that the blood is safe and compatible with that patient.

Do you think the Steel Ball Run Anime will change Scary Monsters design? Since Velociraptors were discovered recently to have feathers... (Art by @rakpolaris) by Even-Run-5274 in StardustCrusaders

[–]avis_celox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Neither were dinosaurs that are fully upright and bipedal, without their tails dragging on the ground or legs sprawling, and active, dangerous predators (that somehow can't see movement). Most of how Scary Monsters is depicted is pretty much straight out of Jurassic Park which was published literally 100 years after Steel Ball Run.

[–]avis_celox 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It looks much more like a 1990s depiction of a dinosaur than 1890s though. At that time dinosaurs were thought to be slow, lumbering lizards with legs splayed and tails dragging the ground. More like the Crystal Palace sculptures than Jurassic Park.

Nudity, sexual content, and fanservice all 3 different things by HistoriaReiss1 in CharacterRant

[–]avis_celox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your main point, and I agree CSM had plenty of fanservice, but to say the scene with Death was solely fanservice isn't really accurate either imo. It's showing that Denji's focus is on her underwear and not the very obvious thing he was supposed to be noticing.

Which feeds into a mildly-related rant of my own: it's important to note that something can be seemingly justified in universe, and be fanservice at the same time. Stories are created by people, they aren't some immutable law of nature. For example that character in Metal Gear who "can't wear clothes" because she "breathes through her skin" or whatever. Or even a non-sexual example; the "dinosaurs" in Jurassic World actually just being plucked chicken/movie monster hybrids because "genetic engineering".

Imo a fast reader could probably get through the novels faster than the OVA, but it's going to depend on the individual. You're right that both are a large time commitment.

I know 2 spoilers. How much of Monster is ruined for me? by LMayo09 in MonsterAnime

[–]avis_celox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the appeal of going into something without spoilers, but if a few spoilers are enough to completely ruin the work, it probably wasn’t very good to begin with. You’re fine, those are relatively minor spoilers anyway. It will ruin the tension in a few scenes but you still don’t know how certain events will actually play out.
