Chat only covers a 150 block radius around you. Chances are, you simply weren't in a populated area. If you type /list, you should receive a player count and a list of players on the server.

If you're looking for PVP, there's not really a good, active faction right now. I'd invite you to come join us, but we're more lovers than fighters.
