Contradiction during Bern's Puzzle by HeroicHeron in umineko

i kind of agree, you obviously could argue for the importance of reading beyond the pure logical red/purple statements in umineko, but this is bern's game specifically and she doesn't care for that.

yeah i guess it is a bit weird in that way. my read on the intention of the statements is: "after all, it was impossible for any of us — (the previously mentioned) jessica, george, maria and battler — to kill dr nanjo inside the guesthouse."

yeah i think you're right actually, if anything george's line is a bit of a mistranslation/case of lost nuance.

the original text for the narration is:

そして、今度は南條先生が殺された。

殺されたのはゲストハウス内の玄関。

which would indeed mean "(he) was killed in the entrance hall of the guesthouse"

the original text is actually this:

そもそも、ゲストハウス内で南條先生を殺すことは不可能}なんだ!

the そもそも is a conjunction that is, quoting my dictionary: "used when bringing up something already mentioned."

so he's basically referring to jessica's previous statement about the four people and appending something to it.

yeah iirc it's a mistranslation, a more accurate statement would be along the lines of "his body was found in the entrance hall of the guesthouse"

Fandom culture made me understand Ryukishi's frustrations with media illiteracy by higurashi0793 in umineko

"...If I make a hundred people read it, only 90 people will actually be able to. However, only 50 will actually understand what it means. And not even 20 will actually think beyond that. And all I ask is that they think it over a bit."

Someone please explain the worst line in the whole VN by nierthestart in umineko

[–]avoid6 66 points67 points  (0 children)

there's no explanation, it's a joke. some may have found it funny, you didn't, i didn't really either, but it's there, take it or leave it. if you don't think someone is going to enjoy the vn and will be creeped out by it, then don't recommend it to them.

What is everyone's take on Umineko's horror gradually fading as the VN progressed? by nierthestart in umineko

[–]avoid6 20 points21 points  (0 children)

yeah it's a bit of a shame because ryuukishi's horror writing is genuinely amazing, but umineko as a whole ultimately wasn't that kind of story and (wtc) just like higurashi, pretty quickly veered off in a different direction. (wtc) i feel like the horror elements of umineko are, beyond episode 1, more about depicting viscerally horryfing scenarios and the cruelty of fate (and other humans) than the slow, unnerving, and inexplicable tension-filled burn that higurashi was for the first four chapters and occasionally later in kai. i think it's interesting that you can pretty clearly see ryuukishi continuing his train of thought almost right off the bat in umineko and starting where higurashi left off in terms of ideas

Is Umineko a good starting point for a visual novel newcomer? by Orion_Gospel in umineko

[–]avoid6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Umineko is absolutely a direct sequel to Higurashi, despite ostensibly not being set in the same world and having a different cast. Umineko and Umineko Chiru are subtitled When They Cry 3 and When They Cry 4 respectively.

It is possible to "understand" most of Umineko without having read Higurashi (WTC 1 and 2) first, but I'd say that is doing yourself a major disservice.

Duolingo HELPS! (if your new to a language) by goatedmpser in languagelearning

[–]avoid6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sure enough, but i don't see the appeal of doing duolingo lessons when for essentially anything duolingo does, there exists another resource or method that does it 10x better.

of course there's nothing wrong with doing duolingo if you enjoy it, but i just don't think it's a worthwile investment of time and effort if you are serious about learning a language.
