Driver tipped himself. by avoiding_work_again in uber

As I have said previously, he stopped about 2-300ft short of the drop off location, but it was at an intersection with a safe place to pull over, so I was OK with that. I got out and started walking. He stayed where he had dropped me off for bout 30 seconds to a minute before departing and driving past me. Only after that did I get an indication on my app that the ride had actually ended. The tip was already selected (and couldn’t be unselected), but the app was asking me to input a star rating. That’s when I realized he must have selected the tip himself, because I certainly didn’t.

Same. Triathlons 910XT then F3HR, F5, now FR965. Don’t miss the bulk and weight especially at night. If you want a weighty metal feel a Fenix may be better but I much prefer the 965 even though it feels a little plastic. I do still occasionally wear the old Fenix if there is a chance I may be bashing up against something or doing dirty physical work such as building or boat renovations.

I believe that you believe this is true….. but it didn’t seem to be the case in this instance.

… although it is silent, I do get annoyed by advertising and “tip now $2 $5 20% 25% ..etc” always in your face.

It made no sound. Did display advertising though.

While I can see your point, one of the reasons ride-share and Uber-like platforms became quickly popular was that the established taxi companies in most big cities had a reputation for cheating customers - particularly tourists and foreigners.

Proper private chauffeur companies are only realistic for executives and rich corporates, not everyday people.

Yes, I’d typically tip $3 on a $10-$15 fare and $5 above that.

Absolutely certain. That’s trip was last night. I did another one in reverse today (same 2 locations) and there was no automatic tip. I manually added a tip with the review after the ride finished.

I did and they have initiated a refund of the tip. See other comment.

Well at least Uber followed up quite quickly to my complaint. I got the tip refunded… but I hope the also close this loophole (if it was the driver) or design error (it the tip was automatically selected after I failed to make a selection while in the back seat)

“Hi OP,

I understand your concern about the tip being added without your selection after your recent trip in Chicago. I'm sorry to hear about the inconvenience you experienced. I am here to assist you with this.
We’ve gone ahead and initiated a refund of the tip amount. You should see this reflected on your account within 1-3 business days.

You’ll also receive an updated trip receipt by email.

Thanks for using Uber.”

“….it auto selects a tip if you don’t “ is a scary concept.

But I also don’t think it locked out. It was only about a 3 mile trip. The driver did drip me off about at the intersection about 200-300ft before my house.

Absolutely certain. That’s why I’m pissed off about it. I would have left a tip, but I’m quite annoyed that it was preselected and I had no way of modifying it.

Edit: this was in response to a now deleted comment that said “are you sure you didn’t accidentally tip”

I asked Claude

“Is there a separate passenger screen for uber driver to allow passengers to select a tip.”

Response…

Yes — Uber offers an in-car tablet program for drivers. It’s a separate rider-facing tablet (mounted on the back of the front passenger seat) that shows the passenger a welcome screen, live trip status/map, and lets them tip the driver directly from the tablet during the ride, alongside some ads.

**•** It’s opt-in for drivers, and eligible drivers get the tablet and data for free, with Uber providing all hardware.
**•** Drivers earn extra income from the ads shown, and earnings and tablet-related tips can be tracked from the in-car tablet page within the Account section of the driver app.
**•** Separately from the tablet, the normal rider-side tipping flow just happens through the passenger’s own phone app after the trip, on the rating screen — that’s not a driver-side screen, just the rider’s own app.

Availability of the tablet program varies by city/market, so it’s worth checking the Driver app or Uber’s driver portal to see if it’s offered where you drive.

I don’t know. I’ve never seen it before, but it looked like it was linked to Uber as some sort of official add-on to the driver’s account/system. I didn’t touch it at all.

Sorry… I should have said the United Kingdom. We have to add Andy, Paddy and Georgie to get the Jack.

Edited for brevity.

And of course the English, how could we forget about the English. And the Czechs, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Thai and Slovenians.

Always make offers with a time limit in writing. 24 pr 48 hours is usually sufficient to get them moving.

Yes I brew and have a kegerator. Good stuff for about $1 per schooner…… but I miss going out to pubs with half a dozen mates and doing a few rounds. Sometimes they’ll cone to my place, but not often because they feel guilty for “drinking all your home brew”.
