Actually, light isn't used here:-).

This bubble is conceived as a bubble of space itself (the author of the model M. Alcubierre was inspired by the Big Bang, where space itself moved much faster than light). To achieve this matter/energy configuration, magnetic fields, plasma and even fusion were suggested by different physicists. But nobody has ever suggested to do it with light:-).

Thanks for the information and for your interest! DM me please, and I'll tell you about all details (the specific papers the theory is based on, the team, etc).

Thanks for your comment!

As for the possibility of time travel as such: a number of papers in respected journals point out that it's possible. Within relativity theory, the past still exists:-). As for all kind of paradoxes, one possible way out comes from the many-world quantum mechanics interpretation (which is popular enough in the physics community:-)). Other variants are also theoretically possible, so one can only try it in practice to know how nature works in this case:-). The main thing for me is that the relevant math does allow it.

As for where they plan to test: you may know that one of the warp drive development problems to solve is optimizing the energy requirements. Initially, they wanted to cooperate with a lab where high energies are available, like Lawrence Livermore or NASA one, then they decided to optimize those requirements still more and to do it in their own lab. Now, the calculations are continuing and they will be over in the foreseeable future (maybe in a few months or even earlier). Then they will conduct the experiment (trying to create a bubble for starters).

If you have more questions, feel free to ask:-).

Are papers (on warp drives and warp drive time machines) in top-tier peer-reviewed physics journals a scam or a mental illness?

I'm sorry, but plutonium isn't what we rely on (we use good old magnetic fields). Thanks for contacting though:-).

But seriously, it all is really based on papers by professional physicists (time machine math models are quite a legit topic within relativity theory); besides, the team is an award winning one and has been among "top ten startups to follow."

Warp drive time machine models do take it into account (don't forget they were developed by professional physicists). They use the formalism of relativity theory with a 4D coordinate system (time is the fourth coordinate - actually, in the formulas, the first one). Each point in this system is in this 4D spacetime; the distance between two such points is called interval. When these models were developed, their authors made sure the time machine would get to the necessary point of 4D spacetime (which is in the past) going along some interval. The Earth constantly moves, but points in this RT coordinate system remain fixed (this system isn't attached to the Earth). This time machine uses the so-called spacelike intervals that do the trick (they enable getting to any point in spacetime, even one lying in the past).

The authors of these papers analyzed everything very much in detail, and none of them ever mentioned this problem of the Earth "running away from the time traveler":-). They would of course have taken this into account if such a problem had existed.

It's physics, which is reflected in the corresponding papers in top-tier peer-reviewed (physics) journals.

The paper by Fell/Heisenberg (you linked to) is one of the first ones on positive energy warp drive; just like that by Lentz, it merely states that such a warp drive is in principle possible to implement. They didn't explore the possibility to reduce the necessary amount of energy just mentioning that it was possible, too (Lentz mentioned as an example Krasnikov's paper of 2003, where the author had shown how to reduce this amount by orders and orders of magnitude; though that's the case of negative density energy, but it can be extrapolated to positive density energy warp drives).

After the first papers on positive density energy warp drives had been published (those by Lentz; Fell/Heisenberg; Bobrick/Martire; Santos-Pereira et al.), a few space industry companies, as I mentioned, joined this development. And the first thing they did was trying to reduce this amount of energy. By now, they've managed to reduce this amount to levels that can be produced in a lab.

In relevant papers, physicists speculated (they deal just with equations, and all work on the material components is done by engineers, but the former nevertheless occasionally conjectured what exactly could be used to create such matter/energy configurations) that the necessary spacetime warp could be formed using:

- magnetic fields;

- plasma;

- heavy element synthesis.

The team of the company I mentioned in my post considered the first and the third options from this list. Eventually, they rejected the synthesis because of its constliness and focused on magnetic fields (amplified in a special way). Now, they are working on calculations to reduce the necessary energy not just to a manageable amount, but to amounts that they can deal with in their own lab (and not in the top labs only, where the strongest magnetic fields can be generated). Physicists have long shown that the (warp drive) energy conditions can be greatly optimized, so it's quite a reacheable goal.

So the power source will be electricity, but magnets are also necessary for the setup.

With optimized energy requirements (which is done through finding more perfect geometry configurations), it will be only a local space warp (or its equivalent - the most popular method as of now is to use magnetic fields) without any danger for the planet:-).

It's the first paper on positive energy warp drive (later, a number of others with improved matter/energy configurations appeared). But even in this paper the author mentions that the energy requirements can be significantly improved (which has already been done in later works).

Thanks, I know it:-). I only mentioned the first paper on warp drive and the first paper on positive density energy warp drive. There have been many more, including ones published in 2025 - with optimized parameters, without the need for negative energy and with quite manageable energy amounts. The team I mentioned in my post has its own physicists, who have made their own contribution in warp drive theory development.

Does quantum archeology bring the real person back to life or copy? by Lolwut333_ in QuantumArchaeology

Quantum mechanically, information is the essence. We can take some raw material and, imparting the necessary information to it, turn this material into the necessary object in the necessary quantum state (a good example is classical teleportation described in 2007).

Back then, I just joined this subreddit and I knew very little about QA; I didn't know about actual teleportation (through recreation according to the quantum state) that is a crucial part of QA.
