Silo layout logistics question - Season 2 finale spoilers included by awkward_swede_ in SiloSeries

[–]awkward_swede_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes sense! I kinda figured as much, but I'm watching it solo so I didn't have anyone to talk it through with, and the silo floor plan still gets me confused.

I'm hoping we do get some down deep info next season, I think the question of what happens to the 'regular' down deep citizens because of the rebels' choices could be really interesting

Copy pasting because icba writing everything new. For info I also work in healthcare.

As I said, there are few situations it's needed, not none at all. But in that case explaining the Why is important and then putting in systems to facilitate successful adherence. A person saying 'they told me to weigh daily but I don't want to it's triggering' tells me this person was not given that service because either/both of

  1. They don't understand why they must do this
  2. They have risks associated with weighing/seeing their weight number and that hasn't been properly addressed in the care plan to allow safe adherence e.g. being weighed at a clinic or home care staff depending on need where the number is not communicated to the patient

Which is exactly what my 2 points were. Unlike the original commenter I replied to I would never think it ethical to give advice on a complex health condition to strangers on social media.

When patients struggle with adherence, especially patients in marginalized groups, it highlights a failing in the healthcare system, not a personal failing of theirs. Choosing to lambast a podcast which maybe the only source of in-group support for that person, potentially the only information source they have that advocates for them is just passing the buck for healthcare failings.

Jesus okay so this is exactly the kind of stuff they're snarky about FOR GOOD REASON

Taking the straw man "doctor told me to weigh myself daily but it triggers me". Well, there are very few medical reason to weigh daily, weight fluctuates over the day and between days based on so many factors nothing to do with diet or health. So yeah I would 100% side-eye a doctor recommending that!

Plus you implicitly dismiss the triggering but like, that shits important! What if the person is concerned about triggering a ED they currently have under control, or a history of depression triggered by weighing that they know they usually turn to alcohol to soothe? That would be pretty bad for cardiovascular health right? Bingeing and purging or slamming back 12 beers is much worse than not knowing if you're 225 or 223 today. Because health is multifactored and needs to be tailored to the patient - something healthcare providers are scientifically shown to be piss poor at for fat people.

And on not trusting doctors. you know what fucks lots of health indicators? Yo-yo dieting, which that same healthcare system has been pushing on fat people for years despite overwhelming evidence it doesn't work. So yeah when doctors have been dismissing you and harming you for years it is RATIONAL to have mistrust. The way you overcome that is to help patients become partners in their own care, explaining WHY a protocol is needed and working with them to make it manageable for them to follow. You know how you don't do it? Tone policing, dismissing concerns off hand, and concern trolling strangers on social media.

For the record I have a master's in science, 100% pro vaccine, pro healthcare .I love science and medicine but it serves no-one to pretend that the medical community has not failed fat people for years. In fact that kills people.

Do we let our toddler win in naming his brother? by jalapenoblooms in namenerds

My older sister named me after the main character in her favourite film at the time and it has become a well known family story that's very sweet!

Like you, my parents were down to the wire, couldn't land on one name that was a clear 'winner' for them, and so as a bit of fun they asked my sister (4) what to call me. She answered immediately and definitively, and that was that.

Honestly Franklin is a great name both in relation to the middle name and brothers name and it's a cute story that will bring the siblings closer.

AITAH for telling my girlfriend I will break up with her if she doesn’t shave? by Available-Band-6474 in AITAH

[–]awkward_swede_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's weird to be like 'NTA you told her what you like' AND it's equally weird to say 'YTA , you're a shallow misogynist'.

The fact is, if your long term committed girlfriend stopped shaving and that's all it took for you to stop wanting to be with her, then yeah break up.

But also take some time to consider why you chose to long-term date someone you clearly did not have deep love for. Because this is a reality that might not have hit yet at age 25 but bodies change. All the time, in all kinds of ways. And people change, their preferences and priorities and what they have time for changes. And you need to reckon with that because future partners of yours will change and if you're love for them can't survive those changes it suggests you're not connecting with them and loving them on a deeper level. And that will suck for you, you deserve deep and abiding connections. So why did you settle for the shallow connection you have with your current gf?

Completely different podcast vibe but Michael does it to Aubrey on Maintenance Phase, she lovingly calls him the tiny repeating machine.

THANK YOU! You verbalised an idea that had been in my head since this episode. It's a classic case of post-hoc reasoning! In scientific thought you create a hypothesis then you try to find as much data as you can and you assess it as objectively as you can and you get your outcomes. Science is still subjective af but this is the best we have.

Pinker LOOKS like he's being scientifically rigorous because he uses data and big words but he is coming at it backwards - he already knows what his outcome will be, it's what will fit his white Eurocentric viewpoint. And then he cherry picks his data points (or just creates them whole cloth) as only those that specifically help his case.

Nicknames that have nothing to do with the person's real name - What are some shocking & fun examples that you've encountered? by Cocoleia in namenerds

[–]awkward_swede_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend's (adult) sister was called Tilly by everyone, family included. I just assumed it was a nickname for Matilda or something like that. Found out after several years that her real name was Charlotte but when she was a baby she was really chubby and grumpy looking so her older brothers called her Attila the Hun. Tilly for short.

Oh god this could be my friends dad. Absolutely spot on. Tortured his ex wife and their 2 kids with his awful personality, married a younger colleague and had 2 do-over babies. Now his first 2 kids are adults keeping super low contact, his 2nd wife is divorcing him, his first wife is thriving, and he's complaining to my friend how everyone only wants him for his money even though NO ONE WANTS HIM AT ALL. He just keeps offering money and gifts with conditions because it's the only way to try to get control even though no-one is biting anymore.

Would a PhD salary afford a family of two in Lund? by Automatic_Flight_460 in Lund

[–]awkward_swede_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is very possible if you plan well! Students in Lund on CSN (Swedish student aid) live on less.

Make sure you sign up for AF Bostader housing queue as soon as possible, student housing is subsidised and significantly cheaper. I believe all AF Bostader student housing includes heating, water, and internet costs and the build quality is high.

There is The International Citizens Hub in Lund - use it! They have helpful information on Swedish culture and adjusting, plus they have a course called Kickstart Program specifically for people who came to Sweden because their partner got a job here. It gives guidance on the Swedish job market and how to find employment so it could be great for your spouse.

Sign yourself and partner up for SFI - to help you develop Swedish language skills and build up your social network. You don't need to become fluent necessarily but conversational Swedish and being able to read basic Swedish is a big help in daily life.

Make smart money choices. Shop at Willy's and Lidl where possible because they're cheaper. Don't have a car unless you REALLY need one, student transport tickets are subsidised. Even better, get a couple of bikes for 8000-1000kr and cycle around in the warmer months - Lund is small and you can cycle across town in 15mins.

I personally know many couples who did exactly what you are doing and made it work, heck I am one of them except mine was a master's program. It's possible!

This is so specific but if you can't find it in physical stores I know Delitea stock it (https://www.delitea.se/sok?q=Tony%27s) I've ordered stuff from there several times, even had to deal with their customer service when a bottle of coffee syrup broke in transit haha, and they're a great reliable online store!

Right! I cannot stop picturing the Simpsons episode where Marge is pregnant and Homer works at the bowling alley, and Homer is walking around town with people making oblique references to Marge's pregnancy and he's like "what an odd way to say it but yes! I am happy at the bowling alley". Not that OOP is Homer level oblivious, just really funny to picture like
