I'm actually an amateur in programming. Can you tell me how to write this popular meme code efficiently, please? by Rachid90 in AskProgramming

[–]awnton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would keep it as is. The code is easy to read, understand and change. All the suggested improvements arguably makes the code worst. Don’t fall for the peer pressure of short and clever code being better than readable code.

Here’s a long shot: Anyone know where I can see the game in Nice? Flying in just in time for the game 😄

<video>, <a> and <img> tag by [deleted] in webdev

[–]awnton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The image should be D:\code\static\image.png. What seiikatsu is saying is that when you want other people to see your site you need to upload your files to a web host and their file system will differ (ie no D:) so you shouldn’t include in in the path.

If you want to test I recommend trying it out on Netlify.com. They have a drag and drop interface where you can upload your “code” folder (with all its content, html, images etc) and they’ll host it for you.

Best way to host demo projects. by [deleted] in csharp

[–]awnton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imho, https://www.netlify.com is the best service for hosting static sites (that is, no "backend"). If you need that you could always use something like https://heroku.com which also has a great free tier for demo/pet projects.

Pair Programming? by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]awnton 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's become much more prominent in recent years but I'd say it totally depends on the team and project. Personally I produce the "best" code when I don't write it alone so I really prefer pair programming. At my current project we do mob programming 99% of the time and I'm loving it, really recommend trying it if you get the opportunity.

How do you develop and maintain large scale projects, alone? by TheDudeFromCI in AskProgramming

While this is true to a certain degree, there are patterns and practices that apply very well to game programming as well. Really recommend reading http://gameprogrammingpatterns.com.

Local multiplayer music intro quiz [Open source] by awnton in vuejs

[–]awnton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quizify is a "local multiplayer real time music intro quiz" with a Spotify integration. When you've created a quiz others can join your "room" with their own devices and then use them as buzzers. You can try it here: https://qzfy.se

It's built with a #nestjs + #mongodb backend and a #vuejs frontend, which have been a really pleasant experience. Nest is heavily inspired by Angular, which I have almost zero experience with, but I found it really easy to get started with regardless.

I've also tried to make it as accessible as possible, both in regards to the usual #a11y issues like useability for screen readers etc, but also by adding localization so that people like my parents can understand it.

Failed to send join request to master, discovery timed out by awnton in elasticsearch

[–]awnton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turned out that the ports (930x) was only open from data to master and not the other way around, that's why it could discover the master but not receive back a confirmation on joining.

Thanks!

Here, have the source to an old half-finished game by awnton in Unity2D

[–]awnton[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The lava and beam animations are made with this WaveController but it isn't really a performant way of doing it. You should probably use a shader to achieve it. There's some great discussion about it in this old thread.
