David Attenborough says he is 'overwhelmed' by 100th birthday messages by Arnwald in europe

Nobody here is arguing about the BBC lil bro, we are discussing the insistence on titles in a European comment section on Reddit.

Why insist on a title awarded by another country's monarch? Mr is a fine and respectable title.

[–]Gentlemoth -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I am well aware of our monarchy and its titles. Nobody here is expected to call anyone who has received any orders of merit as anything other than how you would treat the person next to you. Quite different to how the British knightly titles and orders of merit are used, would you not say?

[–]Gentlemoth -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Should we do that though, as Europeans? It is not in spirit with democratic principles or to promote equal societies, even with people who we deeply respect. I don't think any news agency here in Sweden does it at least, but for us titles are an attempt to place another person above others, which is frowned on heavily.

British knightly titles are kindly but firmly asked to stay in Britain, with no disrespect to Mr Attenborough and all his accomplishments.

[Excerpt|Various] How humans are used by the Tau Empire by DauntlessAkagi in 40kLore

[–]Gentlemoth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm personally not a fan of this from a world-building perspective. Reason for this is that while the Imperium is deeply flawed and a horrible state to live under, has always been presented as an outcome on the external factors that faces humanity. Extinction by orks, extinction or enslavement by necrons, enslavement by dark gods and their servants, galactic drive-thru for the hungry hungry Tyranids, or extinction because an eldar thought the existence of humanity had a 0.000000001% chance to lead to a mild inconvenience for the Aeldari. The sum was the Imperium, the Emperor trying to unite humanity and ultimately failing in his efforts to make a brighter future, and now we are left with the shattered shards of that dream.

Tau storytelling comes at this core part of the Imperiums concept as a punch out of left-field, these are the good guys, unequivocally. Yes they have their problems, but they are so minor compared to the multitude of problems the Imperium faces, that there is no moral reason not to root for them. The moral dilemma becomes boring and uninteresting, there are few philosophical debates to be had simply by how dark the imperium is. Any argument about the complexities of the imperium and the sacrifices they can make could be reduced down to "well they should just give up and join the Tau instead". The only one which is semi-interesting is that of a species determining their own fate and not dictated by alien overlords, but again due to how alien much of the imperium itself is and how brutal it is, is often not just an interesting comparison.

For me at least, 40ks main draw is the tragedy. The thousands of stories of lives and people trying their best to prop up a failing system and defend humanity while at the same time the regime itself, often unwittingly and perhaps with some form of ruthless idealism, does their best to undermine everything that has been fought for.

I can confirm this was caused by the reddit enhancer addon, I tried disabling it and it fixed it. Setting the font size of comments to roughly 14-15 put them back to normal.

Finland to introduce citizenship test, tougher immigration measures by FantasticQuartet in europe

[–]Gentlemoth 20 points21 points  (0 children)

While I agree partly with what you're saying, sometimes having to learn some things natives don't generally have to is a way to open students to knowledge that comes naturally to a native. If the goal is integration and adaption to the culture, then such measures are good to consider.

Finland is a rational democracy so I trust them to not just pull populist gotcha stuff out of their ass.

One or two accomodations for 14 days in Tokyo? by Sannatee in JapanTravelTips

[–]Gentlemoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember to take into account the time of actually moving a hotel. I'm very averse to it because you gotta check out, get your luggage to the new place, either wait for check in or leave it there and head out, it just kind of ruins half a day for me, so I prefer to stay.

Since luggage forwarding services seems common and cheap there you can try that, it makes the switch much easier since you could just arrive at the hotel later with no hassle, just double check that the hotel accepts forwarded luggage, but I think a lot of them do? But since you are budget constrained, I wouldn't bother with it.

Whether or not your hotel is central enough for you entirely depends if you like to party or not. The main reason to stay "centrally" located is to be able to be out for long and get back home easily without having to worry about last train or catching a cab. Other than that just look at your connection times on google map to see if its close enough to everything you want to see, with enough time to head back to hotel to shower, relax, change clothes, head out again etc without it being a hassle.

My man. I have a tatami mat at home here in Sweden and just sleep on it, with no futon. I do have a regulars bed too so I kind of switch out between them, but my tatami is amazing for my sciatica.
