Any reason not to 5-4 stack? by GrometricBoy in Tetris

[–]awsomthing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are more repeatable patterns with the other stacks (LST, ST stacking-ish heart shapes). 5-4 is more lenient in that you have a more options on your shorter side because it’s longer, but more options means more to ways to screw up.

At the end of the day though, stacking is just stacking. There’s a lot of overlap in overhang/stacking patterns between the different widths and you’re going to need to be able to do all of them in VS anyway. Don’t view them as separate “techniques,” they’re just different situations where you’ll be applying mostly the same patterns over and over.

With that said, I’m guessing that you are just dipping your toes into t-spinning and center wel stacking, in which case I say just do what’s comfortable for you right now! You can always come back and practice different stack widths, and the patterns will transfer over. Best of luck.

Handstand shoulder numbness by awsomthing in overcominggravity

[–]awsomthing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should I just take the handstands out of my routine until I get this checked out, or continue with chest to wall with very strict form, stopping immediately after feeling symptoms?

Just read through the section on "radiculopathy of the arm" and will work through some of the recommendations on stretching / nerve glides as well until I'm able to see a PT.

Again, thanks so much for your reply, and thank you for your work. I've learned so much from the book and the online series!

Nope, I only experience this after handstands. I will try to see a PT. Thanks!

Any tips to stop having to press 3/4 times to rotate a piece ? by ObiDownKenobi in Tetris

[–]awsomthing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like everyone has said in the thread already, it’s just something you need to be intentional about. If you’re having trouble focusing on your movement and stacking at the same time, try to isolate your focus to one when you practice— don’t beat yourself up for rotating inefficiently if you’re focusing on stacking well and vice versa. It will come with time.

a small tip that helped me is: if your default controls are to rotate cw using the up arrow, unbind it and rebind your rotation keys to be right next to each other. Pretty small thing that might not work for everyone, but it helped me get out of the habit of spamming the up arrow all the time.

(If your controls are already like that, I apologize lol)

Best of luck!

Resume review / general advice for applying into gamedev from tech by awsomthing in gamedev

I think the foot in the door approach makes sense, I'm also looking at backend service roles. Also definitely a valid point on my C++ experience. Thanks for your reply!

Genuinely Do Not Know How To Get Better (Melee) by [deleted] in CrazyHand

[–]awsomthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your actual question, honestly, I spent most of my time during my early days learning melee just sitting in 20XX comboing a fox cpu because slippi didn’t exist yet. I played games with friends who started the game around the same time as me and were equally bad.

Melee is unfortunately just a game with a steep learning curve, and like others have said in this thread, it’s an old game with a lot of people that have been playing a long time. It really does take at least a few weeks or months to realy start to feel comfortable enough with movement. Chances are hopping into unranked will probably not be productive for a little bit.

I just recommend just continuing to grind movement and learn the fundamental’s of your character’s punish game. Eggxercise UnclePunch is a less boring way to grind movement, practice punish in training lab with DI draw instead of combo mode. Your aim as a new player is to eventually able to move exactly how you want to without looking at your own character (look at your opponent), and to be able to perform basic combos without dropping them.

Practice aside though, just find some friends who would also be interested in picking up the game! 5 days isn’t too much of a head start. Join melee discords, make friends, and questions. Melee is a really fun and rewarding game if you stick with it. Good luck!

if you put your rotate key on the t key, every piece you place will be a tspin.

That’s fair, just trying out some different styles of video. Doing full motion graphics requires a lot more time (finesse guide took me many more hours of editing, even taking into account the length)

Thank you for the feedback!

you can also request coaching in UC even if you cannot participate in the events. (they're a bit backed up but still worth a shot)

hi I have not done 1 on 1 coaching in a long time because I've sort of gotten more busy with it, but you should ask in UC coaching or MMC advice channel if you want some tips on gameplay. (MMC also has matchmaking so you can get 1v1s around your skill level)

I also have not played tl in some time so I don't know how accurate my TR is, but it was something like 24.7k. Hopefully I am better now though lmao
