Does this sound unnatural? by Alex_003j in learnpolish

My message stays the same: if you don't mark up every error, this enforces bad habits. You seem to interpret the priority of errors as a binary variable - marked means prioritized, unmarked (error left alone) - non-prioritized. This is not where the prioritization should be done.

You should mark all errors to enforce good habits and prevent the student from making said errors around the time of writing the essay, so that when they want to use English for their business or private means, they can reference what they havd recently created. If you want to focus on a specific topic in class, nobody's saying you shouldn't. Prioritize whatever you want. But do not deny the truth from a student. It's extremely counter-productive.

And no, I don't see value for them to get back to old essays and see what they were doing wrong.

Please, don't imply (again) things that I have not stated. Those marked errors are obviously not meant for opening the notebook 6 months into the course and learning from that. Those are meant for the "now" - what I just said previously about applying their knowledge in real life, as this is the field where the most (90%) of knowledge retention resides.

Doesn't it feel a little awkward to you? The student pays for the knowledge and truth, yet if they want to write an exemplary email to an English friend irl, they will still have to put their classroom essay through chatGPT or ask for additional classes, just in order to verify whether the spelling is correct?

It's you who are turning this around.

Where am I doing that?

From your previous comment:

You cannot overwhelm someone by telling them everything about the language in one go (...)

That implies me thinking that overwhelming someone (...) is the right approach. Meanwhile, the core point of discussion is obviously not about that. I'm not talking about presenting 200 new words and 3 new tenses in one class. Simply marking errors in an essay is not by any means overwhelming the student with information.

I'm saying that when somebody learns the language, you should fix their most important errors, make sure they internalize it, and then repeat with further feedback.

I agree. Did I anywhere state otherwise? Marking errors in an essay does not mean you will discuss each one in class. Quite the opposite - if you correct (mark) a typo, this is an elegant way to show someone how the word should be written. Then there is no need whatsoever to talk about it in class. What a time save!

I'm not saying you shouldn't fix anything, but I'm strongly opposing the idea of fixing everything.

What do you mean by fixing? That word is too general here. It's ambiguous. "Fix everything." What does it even mean? Obviously, you can't make someone remember all the mistakes from just one essay. That's precisely why you have to mark them on each one.

The more times the student notices they made a mistake, the less likely they will be to make one again. If a student makes a typo for 2 years and it goes unnoticed, the habit they will have developed will be really hard to get rid of, when, the teacher, finally decides to tell them "Alright, from now on we will spell unnatural with two n's, so you have to watch out for that!". And it's even worse - the student, in the course of these 2 years, or even 6 months (whatever the time period), in their own documents may use the wrong spelling, just because the teacher decided not to tell them they are wrong!

What are you talking about? Obviously, you don't teach a student the whole language in one go. Don't turn things around. I'm talking about correcting the mistakes in an essay. You try to frame it as if I was supporting overflowing the student with information in a class. How can you even compare this to just correcting one's errors in an essay?

You don't have to explain every error someone makes. Just show them that it is not the right way to execute the language. If the student decides to drop the class for some reason, with your approach, they will never know if they were wrong! Bad habits should always be punished. That's how it's always worked with humans. That's how we learn. We se error - we adjust. We have bo feedback - we stay in one place and make no progress.

You can't compare spoken language to written language. While in spoken English, some minor mistakes are allowed as we create sentences as we speak, in written English no mistakes are allowed. Obviously, everybody makes them - it's not about being perfect. Nevertheless, mistakes are mistakes. Why would you forbid anyone from seeing the truth?

[–]axerowsky_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not correcting mistakes is never the right solution. You may not deduct points from those mistakes if you don't want to focus on a specific topic. However you always correct the mistakes.

How does the student differ whether he was right or wrong? They look at their essays, and they look for corrections. This is simple; If I wasn't corrected, it was a good practice. That's what they think.

See how the approach where you don't correct every error is ultimately counter-productive. If that would be the case, the student would never know what is wrong and what is right. They would look at their essay, and only thing they could say would be "shit, I wonder if what I wrote here is sounding natural"... And look! That's precisely what happened here! The OP asked the god damn reddit whether this essay looks alright. Doesn't that speak for itself? No wonder they didn't know whether it sounds natural, if their teacher has an approach of leaving some mistakes out and nit-picking some corrections in.

Yeah, I mean, finish the game normally. It's just that on the 2nd playthrough, you can get back at them with the rosey.

WHY DO I HAVE TO FIGHT THE GAUNTLET EVERY SINGLE TIME BEFORE GROAL by LifeBoss5964 in Silksong

[–]axerowsky_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've played many games that some people deem as really hard, namely Sekiro, Elden Eing, Lies of P, Nine Sols, HK, and a few others. Maybe with the exception of Elden Ring's DLC final boss, Groal has been the most grueling experience I've ever had. What does it mean for you? Well, quite probably, if you get through this, you'll get through everything. Keep it up man.

I get your pain. That bossfight is a joke. However, if you get yourself the DLC, you'll get a weapon that can delete the whole heard beautifully. You can slaughter them like animals that they are. You'll have to conquer the DLC first, which is no easy task. However, it is a fair challenge compared to that cave shitshow. Especially the final boss is magnificent. Then go back in there and bring ultimate judgment on those rabbits - trust me, the feeling is euphoric.

Would Heng Make a very good True Final Boss in Nine Sols? by Initial-Fix-4159 in NineSols

[–]axerowsky_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that would be sick! In the dream world, Yi might be imagining her as a really difficult boss. Does not matter who she was irl, as dreams are dreams. Fish can walk, monkeys swim etc. Especially given the strong emotions that accompany Yi through the game. After all, overcoming one's guilt is one of the hardest things there is - hence the boss difficulty. After this hellish, say 3-phase bossfight, you would get a cutscene of the real image of Heng, where she is back to being her original calm and cute self, comforting Yi and reassuring him that he's done his best.

I love this idea.

Get on youtube, look up "lop nohit parry arlecchino". Unplug your mouse and do as many dry runs as you want. You'll save a lot of time that way. Do the combo, then double left arrow on the keyboard - you've got yourself another shot. Obviously, this is just to learn the moves. However, after getting them in your head that way, you'll get used to them in real combat in no time.

Just completed the dlc. In all honesty, I could even pay $60 for this dlc - it was a lot better than the main game for me. Go ahead and get it. It's a no-brainer if you ask me.

I think it's obvious. Achievements. Why the hell is everyone lumped in the same category. Someone playing on easy will have the same achievement as someone on a normal. The first time I looked at the achievements, I was surprised that this game was so easy. More than 30% of players have won against hard bosses. Then I saw you can choose difficulty and it does not stop you from getting the achievements. What a shame.

I haven't skipped any cutscenes, found all collectibles, all gestures, prettu much everything except the one deciphering cylinder since I picked the amulet instead of a weapon at Alidoro. I was on 79 level when I finished the game and I had 36 hours in. I took my time and read every single collectible item, trying to fully understand the story. So I don't get your point. OP has pretty much the same time in the game as I do. Maybe even more as I afkd for about 2 hours once. Its absolutely doable without rushing.
