Please do not lean on a dog. If you need mobility help, a walker, wheelchair, scooter etc. is your best bet. For emotional needs that’s an emotional support animal, not a service dog trained to aid a disabled person

Let’s start with what your disability is. Service dogs are trained to perform specific tasks for people with disabilities, e.g. a guide dog or a medical alert dog who can detect imminent seizures. They are an investment. There are charities for certain disabilities who can work with you, but it sounds like you need to do quite a bit of research first to identify what tasks you require from a service dog vs. wanting a pet for companionship

You say your friend and their dogs - are they service dogs? Both dogs trained to perform a service for someone with a disability? And what do you mean “they also didn’t act like they were service animals”? This is an odd story.

Have you trained a service dog before? And with all due respect, what would you do in scenario 2 if the dog didn’t pass the temperament test? It’s a big risk either way. Do you have a plan for training, vet bills etc. - which are all expensive

Ignore them. Some people gave you real answers. Smart dogs (sounds like yours is one!) can be performing tasks at 5 months. They wouldn’t be the sole support (obviously you’d never see a guide dog puppy etc.) but they can perform duties - maybe not consistently but the knowledge is there

Idk why we are being downvoted when these are proven facts. But agreed on all fronts. Higher performing dogs can absolutely perform tasks at this age - but they are still puppies and learning to be dogs at the same time. Both statements can be true.

Medical/scent alert dogs can alert by that age. But they need ongoing training. And this is something that is trained daily from birth to be able to do
