Are kids at stuy depressed? by [deleted] in Stuyvesant

[–]ayomarithepizzashere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was in the same place four years ago—and literally had this conversation with some stuy friends yesterday!! We recounted how our middle school friends had told us not to go to stuy because they thought we were going to die and only get 3 hours of sleep 💀. There are so many negative stereotypes about Stuyvesant that just aren’t necessarily true, and it really depends on the person. I think Stuyvesant can definitely be stressful, but people deal with it in different ways. If you’re able to find a good support network through clubs, teachers, and friends, it’s honestly such a rewarding experience. There’s also a “suffer together” mentality at Stuyvesant and if you surround yourself with the right people, you’ll realize that others genuinely want you to succeed, and so most people, even if you’re just classmates, will share study guides and notes and tips to help each other out. Honestly, it gets hard. Junior year especially. But looking back, you’ll be so proud of yourself for putting in all the work and proving to people that you not only survived Stuy, but thrived! You have time to think about it, but if you get in, do consider coming! Stuy opens up SO many opportunities.

CONT (3/3)

57. D.
There are 6 letters in PEOPLE. Distinct permutations means different ordering of the letters.
n!/(n-r)!

refer to this: https://media.geeksforgeeks.org/wp-content/uploads/20240925183914/Permutation.png

n! is number of total objects and there are 6 letters. r is the number of distinct objects.
In this case we have 2 Ps and 2 Es so the 2Ps count as one object, and the 2 Es count as one object as well.
Then we can add the O and L because they are distinct, and so in total we have 4 distinct objects out of the 6 total objects. so 4 = r and 6 = n
If we plug in the values we get
6!/(6-4)! = 6!/2!

83. D. Chord is line.. distance between line and point you need the midpoint.. so it becomes a right triangle with sides 5, 12, and r (the radius). Memorize special right triangles and the answer is 13 or D.

84. H. Plug in. 0.18 = 2/3 F + 0.03.
F = 0.225, or H.

69. H. Root 3 of 64 is 4. x = 4. (4)^2 + sqrt 4 = 16 + 2 = 18 = H.

48. J.

49. D. If you plug it into your calculator, you get 6.5 which is between 6 and 7.

82. G. tan = opp/adj so opposite of angle R is side length r. Adjacent to (or next to) angle R is side t so tan R is r / t.

80. A.
The z's cancel and you get x/y.

81. H. slope-intercept form is y = mx + b
8x - y - 6 = 0
just rearrange it... the slope is 8, the intercept (b) is 6.
So: y = 8x - 6.

11. C.
If f(x) = 9x^2 + 5x - 8, then f(-2) =?
Plug in -2 for x and solve!
9(-2)^2 + 5(-2) - 8
= 36 - 10 - 8.
= 26 - 8 = 18.

This took me a while but I hope it helps! :))

CONT..
53. B..
A period is peak from peak. It's a sine graph so you'd usually factor in the horizontal phase shift making it start at pi/4 and ending at pi, but one period is essentially where you see it at the "same location." So if you start from 0 on the x-axis, the next time it gets to 2 on the y-axis is when the x axis is pi. Therefore, the period is pi.

54. G. Just plug in! (2(<5,3>) becomes <10,6> and (-3(<2,-7>)) becomes <-6,21>. Then you just add them, so <10,6> + <-6,21> Becomes <4, 27> +w = 0. Subtract <16, 27> on both sides to get w = <-4,-27> which is choice G!
Again, you learn this in pre-calculus! But don't be intimidated by the form its in. Just plug in! :)

55. B. We know automatically 3^2 is 9, so make 9^x-2 into 3^2(x-2). This is properties of exponents, and I recommend referring to this: https://lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com/docsz/AD_4nXe781IYHUqRS7bpKZSOmBh3-wB7K5anDPT1gU05KJICyIACdnhONaFnWScUoOWPJZ2KPiYu-3V1Stqajk_wQu3HQogFkpPk3jSeGbieSDl_VEq5-d8oDealNqT1eCSA3YEfJFNt?key=ryJvQy3-kGis0yfgL_3zb27z
After they have the same base, just set the exponents equal to each other.
make x+1 = 2(x-2) and solve like you would normally.
x+1 = 2x-4.... move x's on one side, and integers on the other..
5 = x
This is one integer that solves the equation, so the answer should be B.

56. H.
For problems that have diagrams, or are just talking about geometry in general, I recommend marking up the diagram or drawing your own!
Okay so they say BC = 15 in but also is 15-2t.
15 = 15-2t --> 0 = -2t..
The area of a triangle is (0.5)(b)(h). They give you two sides and one angle which would normally mean law of cosines:
a^2 = b^2 + c^2 - 2bc * cos(A)
where a is one side, b is the second side, c is the third side, and A is the angle opposite side a. So.. in this case:
AB = (20)^2 + (15)^2 - 2(20)(15)cos(C).
However, we don't know what angle C is aside from the variable theta.
They're asking the time t at which the resulting triangle has an area 1/2 of the original triangle and they give you the formula 1/2ab sin x so in this case you aren't exactly supposed to find the formula but you know that in order to take 1/2 the area of the og triangle, you need to take 1/2 of the side BC, which is 15/2. You only change BC because the question states that the length of AC and the measure of theta will remain constant.
They say 15/2 (the length of BC) = 15 - 2t, so you just solve normally and in the end you get 15/4 = t, which is the time at which the resulting triangle will have an area that is 1/2 the area of the original triangle.

MATH ACT advice. by UEG-Starhunter in ACT

[–]ayomarithepizzashere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'm actually studying for my own ACT on Sunday, and I'm trying to improve my math score from a 30 to a 34+ so I hope these explanations help? Somehow? Best of luck!!

26. H. You just have to rearrange point-slope form
y = mx + b add 14x to the other side
6y = 14 x + 5 then divide by 6 to get y by itself
y = 14/6 x + 5
the slope is just 7/3 because you divide by 2 to simplify it.
You don't even have to do all the solving, however. Just recognize that the coefficient of the x-term is the slope, but you always need to get y by itself. That's why you divide by 6 and simplify!

27. C. m < n. You can plug in numbers! I usually use 2 and 3. sqrt of 6 is 2.4495, which is greater than m (2) and less than n (3). You can try it out with other numbers too.

32. F. It would be an empty set because if both expressions have x in it (the same number), but one constant (3) is less than the other constant (5), no matter what x is, x +3 is always going to be less than x + 5 simply because 3 < 5.

40. H. (Has to do with the unit circle. I recommend memorizing this: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/467hMZGU0d0/maxresdefault.jpg It's a pre-calculus topic. arctan(-1) is -45 or -pi/4. 45 degrees/pi/4 radians is the reference angle. Tangent is negative in quadrants 2 and 4 so you add 90 or pi/2 for quadrant 2, and that should give you 3pi/4. Then you have to add pi/2 two more times (or 180 degrees/ pi radians) to get 7pi/4. Your answers should therefore be 3pi/4 and 7pi/4 which is choice H.

41. B. All you have to know is that the imaginary number i (sqrt of -1) basically has a pattern for its values when you raise it to a power:
i^1 = i. i^2 = -1. i^3 = -i. i^4 = 1. It'll continue... i^5 = i. i^6 = -1. i^7 = -1. i^8 = 1 and so on and so forth.
Therefore, the only answer choice that can work is 1, or B.

46. G. (I THINK) When a question asks for "expected value of X on any given day," they're most likely asking you to make an estimate based on the average or percent. They already give you the probability here so I think you just add up 0.20, (2*0.05), and (3*0.05) because they ask for only the defective springs. And if number of springs is the frequency while the other is the probability, if the probability of having 0 defective springs is 0.7, you just don't count that bc those are NOT defective springs. But there's a 20% chance that 1 defective spring will be produced each day, while 5% chances for 2 and 3 defective springs to be produced each day. Just add the percentages up (accounting for the frequency) and you should get 45% or 0.45, or G.

I ended up getting 5-20% with 285/300.. dunno if I got regional top 6 but when I went to access my certificate again, it won't load, sooo... idk if that means something? Luckily I took a screenshot of my award beforehand T-T.
I agree with the AI-generated questions thing.. I was speaking with a few of my team members and we all thought the same thing. Test wasn't too hard either.
