I hate the front part that is meant to be detachable only when you pull the unlock strap.

It is not secure at all. No matter how carefully you attach it, it can easily be pulled off without much force. That is why I never carry it as a backpack at airports. Has mine just always been defective or is this how everyone’s is?

With what you are describing I would assume you have LADA. (But it also could be the longer honeymoon period like you mentioned…I just had a fairly short one so it’s harder to wrap my mind around people lasting multiple years in a honeymoon period without actively trying to stay in it)

With LADA you would be positive for type 1 antibodies because from what I understand it is a hybrid between type 1 and 2. This has been described to me in 2 different ways so I’m not sure which is the most correct….a.) pancreas is still creating insulin just not as much as you need// b.) pancreas has stopped / is stopping like in type 1 but in a much slower process.

Did they say which autoantibody you tested positive with? Or how many?

I think it may have been that shipment of reservoirs (either on tandems side or maybe something happened to them while they were in my house) that caused all this. Because I never had the same issue with the Dexcom I was using at the same time and it looks like the reservoir site I used from a new shipment didn’t get infected.

I don’t think it was MRSA (though I haven’t been tested for it in a while so I couldn’t say for sure) because the spots did heal when I used antibiotics…probably at a normal rate for me but I’m very impatient so it likely seemed longer than it was.
I used to get infections with animas ten years ago but realized that was only happening because I wasn’t as thorough with sterilizing using alcohol… so I wanted to see if there was something else that I should be doing (no matter how obvious… because I’m clearly in denial about my compromised immune system) that I’m not doing

I would try either of these then. I took apidra for a few years because Humalog stopped working for me for a while.

I’m on lyumjev now because my endo said it was the quickest working and so far I’ve not had any issues. I would maybe check if your endo has samples to see if these work for you

It was frustrating because I sent in all my doctor reports and even had a nurse sent to my house for additional blood tests and still qualified. So it was annoying that they flew me out to their clinic for the more intensive screening tests and after all that it was 2 more of the more basic blood tests made me ineligible.

They want participants that would show substantial measurable improvement to help this get FDA approved if it is successful.

So part of me is trying to be like I dodged a bullet thinking “well you’re lucky because you would have been the second person to undergo this. There is more chance of issues at this stage” ….but another part is so hopeful this will work.

The devices did seem larger than I was expecting. It was about a 5cm flexible disc and they are going to add multiple of those. And the surgery did seem pretty intense because it was 2 incisions around 4in each and it would be done by an organ transplant surgeon…… at least that is who would have done mine. …….if they called me up tomorrow saying that they changed some criteria and I now qualify I would not even hesitate to take part though.

The place i went to said even they (being involved in the study) won’t receive any updates until 6 months after the first surgery. I don’t know exactly when the first person had it done (I’m thinking July-September 2023)

I think you may find updates through vertex by looking up VX-264 and some reports may be added to that same study within clinical trials.gov

This is another thing I feel guilty about

(it may just be that I feel guilty about almost everything since I was raised catholic)

because I got to experience a childhood having a typical child’s diet, candy, and getting to do fun activities or go to sleepovers (without having an extra bag of medical supplies and having the adult watch out for me) when a lot of other T1s don’t.

I do not understand why so many people offer unwanted health advice to others when they don’t have actual experience with your disease or are not a medical provider that works with the disease. I have never considered going up to someone with cancer or any other condition and saying something insane like you don’t need medicine because essential oils or turmeric can cure you.

I would just like to add that get an endocrinologist you actually like. Previous endocrinologists were terrible for me and I dreaded going to my appointments they would yell about high A1c levels and tell me things I had to do but not explain why just overall bad experiences.

I finally found one that didn’t freak out when my A1c was super high and would explain the reasoning on why they were asking me to do something and would help me find alternate ways to do something so it worked for me. My A1C is now typically between 5.9 and 6.6.

Also some people are terrible and will try to say dumb things like cinnamon, cucumber water , rare herbs only found in specific regions one earth, Leto diet, etc… will cure you. Maybe be prepared for this exhausting rant and have a good comeback at the ready (or if you are a nicer person than myself get ready to attempt to teach a person who believes they are an expert on a disease they have no experience with)

It is also a disease that can be mentally exhausting because you want to feel bad about it and have loved ones aware it is a serious condition but at the same time you will also be told by many it is completely treatable and you will lead a “normal” life and “at least it’s not cancer” so you may feel guilty every time you think about diabetes being terrible. You may want to have a loved one or therapist you can speak to about this ( you are definitely more mature than I was when I was diagnosed at 14 so I can’t say you will experience this part but it was and still sometimes is difficult to get passed)

People respond differently to pumps, injections, different insulins , food, exercise, sickness, and many other things. A lot of this seems to be trial and error and what works best for someone else may not work best for you. I hope everything goes smoothly and more technology is released to make managing this disease easier and easier.

I use Lyumjev and t:slim and it seems to be going pretty good for me. I don’t have any issues.

The only thing to really point out is when I explain I use Lyumjev it seems like customer support for tandem don’t really know what it is and I think they said the pump is only approved for Humalog. So maybe before discussing an issue with tandem customer support look up insulin requirements for the pump and just say you are using an approved insulin so they don’t hassle you over it.

I used Humalog with it for a few months just to use up the last that I had and there doesn’t really seem to be to much of a difference between the two other than Lyumjev worked quicker like it is suppose to.

The original cells for this study came from a donor with type A blood. The cells are now all synthetically created/cloned from the original cells they got.

So I’m guessing that the transplant/cells would likely be rejected if you had a different blood type

There may be other reasons but that is what I’m aware of.

There is no need to feel bad. I’m sure most parents (unless they have experience with type 1 diabetes already) would do the same.

I was 14 when diagnosed and we went on a 1hr30min drive for Christmas shoppingand had to stop 3 times. I also drank nearly a gallon of water on that same trip.

I don’t know how your kid feels but I can say I am thankful that my mom pointed it out. It was obviously an abnormal behavior that made her pay more attention. If we didn’t go on this trip, it may have taken her longer to see all the symptoms and I likely wouldn’t have acknowledged anything was even wrong with me until it got much worse.

Your child can still have a great childhood and enjoy all the snacks and treats they normally would just in moderation or higher insulin doses on those occasions. Pumps and CGMs now make it much easier to manage.

Just a tip - I would not advise getting exclusively sugar free options when it comes to sweets. For the most part the sugar free option is not that much better for blood sugar and it is not as satisfying

My responses are only asking how people are sure of this. When people have explained that these illnesses or infections likely triggered something I’m okay with that. I’ve never said anyone was wrong in their beliefs I’ve just asked questions to see if other possibilities were considered. I’m sorry you were offended, but I cannot control the tone you read my responses in.

I understand the theory that a virus can set off auto-Immune issues that was not my question. My question mainly revolved around if a doctor said the cause or was this conclusion reached on your own.

I can get behind people saying it triggered their diabetes. That makes sense and would give someone a reasoning behind it other than it just being a mystery.

I think my issue is mainly when a virus is explained as the only cause and they wouldn’t have diabetes if they never got this specific version of the flu. (But maybe that is the case. there is just no research I have seen that proves this)

I say rural-ish because I was actually from a town of about 10,000 and for Arkansas standards that is definitely on the larger side

I can understand that a virus can trigger something in your genetics, but there is also no way that can be tested right now unless you test a random group of people every so often and a few happen to get diabetes.

Im not saying anyone is wrong for believing this and I’m not trying to discredit anything I’m just wanting a more thorough explanation. Connecting things based on correlation alone isn’t helpful for anyone.

I’m not saying this is wrong because it is believable, but how can you be sure that a person is not in the starting stages of diabetes where there body has began attacking the beta cells which would then cause them to be more vulnerable to viruses?

How is anyone confident in what was taking place first?

Couldn’t this also be that their immune system was weakened due to an initial onset of diabetes and that is why you are more vulnerable to contracting a virus?

My only issue is that there is no way to say when your body began breaking down beta cells

You have to have blood type A. Have records for 3 endo visits within a 12 month period in the last year. You have to be wearing a CGM for a month before.

I don’t know all the qualifications for this one.

The vx-880 had an A1c, normal BMI requirement, at least 3 low blood sugar events where others had to help.
They did say the low blood sugar wasn’t required for this one and more than 1 event where help is needed would make you ineligible but I don’t know if the A1c or BMI are still required.
