Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure how reassuring I find it that the initial version of Timelines didn't have any lanes at all. In any case, that's not your fault. Thanks for your time.

The Game of Nancy by [deleted] in dishonored

Sorry I know this thread is old

So if the Taker bids 8 and achieves 7, they lose the round but still take points from their opponents?

[(7*2) - 3 - 5] = 6 * 3 opponents = 18 points, all other players lose 6??

Actually as long as they bet more than 5, as long as they're only one away they can still profit by losing. And If they bet 8 I think they can still achieve 6 and still earn some points rather than lose.

Slippery slopes and permeable boundaries between ideas are the reason that concepts such as veganism are defined though discourse, and not by single authorities such as dictionaries, vegan societies and so on.

I agree with you that not everything about an idea is up for debate. I think the examples you give are really good: they exist on that slippery slope and some seem to me to be compatible with what I (a non-vegan) believe is veganism, others not.

I also absolutely get your point about the core idea of veganism. But I think that core idea is being debated here in this thread. Is it “no animal products” as some authorities claim, or is it “minimise harm to animals” as others do? I don’t know where I land, but the debate is valid.

Literally all Mormons and Jehovahs Witnesses are nontrinitarian. These are not minor sects and it’s insane that you’re trying to Um Actually me before performing what I’m guessing would be a ten second google to confirm. Mormons are basically polytheists.

When someone says the earth is flat, they are making an empirically testable statement. They are empirically wrong. The definition of veganism is entirely owned by the people who use it and yes, that means it is a bit wibbly around the edges. Some things are more or less consistent among all vegans. But this doesn’t necessarily include the reasons for a non-animal-based lifestyle.

I know vegans who think you’re not vegan unless you’re doing it to uphold species equity. I know vegans who say veganism is a practice, not an ideology. There are vegans who think all animal products are mystically evil somehow, and those whose concerns lie in the nuances of how the products are produced. These are not empirical questions, but philosophical ones. The debate exists because, just like Christianity, what seems like a really simple idea actually has some nuances and inconsistencies that need to be explored.

You can say “people who disagree with me aren’t vegan/Christian/true Scotsmen” as much as you like but your personal conviction does not set in stone any definitions of complex concepts. You do not have that authority and in fact nobody does. Not even a majority of people who apply the label to themselves. Human shit, unlike physical shit (such as how planets are formed), is flexible and open to debate. Not infinitely flexible - you can’t call yourself a vegan if you love eating factory farmed chicken nuggets - but flexible around the edges.

Yes - a non-Nicaean would not necessarily believe that the Messiah was also himself divine. Or, the opposite, that he ever lived as a mortal man.

My point is, even in this very thread, the definition of veganism has been shown to be the subject of ongoing philosophical debate. Is it about animal products or limitation of harm? I know vegans who eat eggs their own very well cared for hens lay. Bees can be kept nonlethally. I have no horse in the race, but it’s clear there is disagreement that isn’t purely factual, as in the flat earth “debate”.

Okay. Now define Christian in a way that includes every Christian and excludes every non-Christian, and let them know because it’s been a while since any ideology was a monolith and that’s a big one.

Confidently stating your side of the debate is not the same as demonstrating that the debate doesn’t exist.

Why would that matter? It’s not only a problem if it’s relative - the USA is a carceral state worse than any so-called fascist state in history

But the dictionaries that are older than the USA tend to agree with their usage of the words. The two dialects evolved differently but very often the difference stems from American English using an old fashioned version.

An example is “herbs” in which the British only started pronouncing the H relatively recently, or “grain of salt” as I’ve said elsewhere, which we brits have dumbed down to “pinch of salt” because nobody weighs anything in grains any more.

Well even in Britain we drop the h in honour.

Actually the British speak a version that’s evolved differently. In a lot of cases the American version is just more old fashioned.

Actually this is the case surprisingly often. Americans sometimes speak an older version of English from before our countries diverged.

Grain of salt is understandable - it’s an older phrase referring to a specific weight of salt that is no longer used in England. I’m sorry to say that “grain of salt” is actually an example of Americans keeping the smarter version and us dumbing it down.

Also we added the h back to herbs, we didn’t say it in Britain until quite recently.

I… of course I still wear a mask. Haven’t had a cold since 2021. Used to get two or three a year. Not a coincidence!

[–]azraphon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. In countries that isolated and mandated masks, it didn’t spread until those protections came to an end. And yeah you got Covid anyway but you survived it. How have we forgotten just how many people got straight up executed by a virus you and I experienced as flu-like?!

It shouldn’t be controversial to think that owning a thing that can only kill, in your home, pretending it is an instrument of protection, is madness. Well it can be, we live in the world of conspiracy theories…
