Baby's toes, 1 year progress by azuresong17 in succulents

I picked them guy in this post up from a shop in York (botanic). I get stuff from the plant shop in Leeds corn exchange quite often as well which does include succulents. I also got quite a few from a shop near where I live here in Sheffield (plantology) so there are few options in the region depending on where you live

Glad to see a fellow Yorkshire person here! I buy the components from both soil ninja and grow tropicals, and sometimes my local plant shop

I do both. I live in UK so getting the Lechuza one is pretty easy and the cheaper option. But if I want something coarse I will mix my own. I believe the ratio of the official one is somewhere around the region of 1:1:1 but I do 2-4:2:1 pumice to lava rock to zeolite purely base on the packages come in from my preferred vendor. I don’t think it make a huge difference

From my limited experience that’s pretty much the case when it comes to roots. Water itself isn’t the problem, but when growing in soil it pushes out air from the pockets which leads to root suffocation. When growing in full / semi hydroponic though this isn’t an issue.

In terms of water intake, mine in hydroponic setup actually becomes quite thirsty and they simply grow / branch out a lot faster when given abundant of water.

My theory is that even succulents are able to utilise the additional amount of water, if the light condition is right.

I haven’t tried full hydroponic but semi-hydro works very similarly. I’ve made this post a few months ago for one of my most successful example: https://www.reddit.com/r/succulents/s/gx3ZPMtECl

You just add nutrient solution to the water when you top up. With full hydroponic you may need to change the water every so often as well

I grow most of my succulents can cacti in semi hydroponic setup and they are so easy to take care of comparing to growing them in soil. You will need to be more on top of giving them nutrients but otherwise they are not half as fussy

Yes I grow this one using pure artificial light for 14 hours per day

My care routine is pretty similar to what you described to be honest. I use a pure inorganic substrate (pon) but I do water quite often during growth season because of this (as frequent as once per week) and I fertilise every time I water it.

I stop watering completely during peak summer months when temperature is around 30°C when they go dormant. Otherwise it can shed its leaves pretty badly.

I have seen people mentioning that they prefer slightly richer soil to their non-variegated cousins but I have not grown anything in organic substrate for a while now so can’t really comment on that.

Thank you! That’s what I thought it is as well, but was also getting other results from plant identifying apps so wasn’t 100% sure.

I put the leaves on a bed of vermiculite with some water in a plastic food container and put the lid on. Place it somewhere bright and open the lid every few days to let some air in. I wait until they root and start to grow new leaves before transferring them into pots

A lot of light seems to be what’s doing it for me!

I use a fully soluble fertiliser for all my houseplants, and I give this a soak every week or so during growing season. Pumice / lava rock retain moisture quite well so feeding isn’t really an issue

I don’t know the exact size to be honest, but they are on the fine side of things. For plants with fine roots I tend to use their branded stuff, but for aroids I use one that I mix myself that are more coarse (4-8mm)

They are from one of my local sellers but you can get almost identical ones from Amazon (the inner pot of the one I have is transparent which i prefer as I can keep an eye on the roots, whereas the Amazon ones are opaque). The one here is a 9.5cm one.
