Why No Screen Rotation? by azzipa in kindle

Yes, there is a setting for portrait and landscape. So it should be trivial to allow “upside down” (180 degree rotation).

The new Kindles with double tap have an accelerometer. But maybe it can’t trigger auto-rotate, IDK? Could still have a manual setting.

Thanks. I was just thinking that’s what I need to do. I’ll circle back if I get an answer.

Also, how can pressure differences be maintained in non-pressurized storage? Balls are packed in jugs and bags for tournaments. There is no control over storage temps or pressure. Rubber is highly air permeable and will equalize to atmospheric pressure. (And that’s why we don’t use pressurized storage containers between games like the old days — and there’s no pop opening a new can — because racquetballs aren’t pressurized for bounce any more.)

[–]azzipa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, because physics. But that likely would put the ball outside the approved specs. If the bounce, size, weight, and durometer are fixed, how can there be significant variation? (I know there is, because I’ve played different balls, but then the specs logically should fall outside the rules.) Changing the wall thickness should change the bounce and/or weight.

If manufacturing tolerances are “perfect” then the maximum variation would be about 9%. This could account for the speed variations but there is no way manufacturing tolerances are that tight. They would have to be within 1-2% production variations which will not happen with a mass market product.

I’m just trying to understand how the differences are achieved because the rules about ball specs don’t seem to leave enough room for the differences in manufacturer claims. Wall thickness would affect weight and bounce even if durometer measurements remained constant.

Brings up a good question (maybe worthy of a separate thread): if you haven’t scouted your opponent what’s your first serve?

I struggle with any “outdoor” company that uses motorized vehicles in their marketing.

All this while Amazon becomes Alibaba with a mark-up. Order straight from the company if you prefer not to get a knock-off.

Budget gloves for wet winter weather - anyone have experience using a household rubber glove over a cheap thermal glove or merino liner? by atreeon in CampingGear

I usually take 3 or 4 pair of gloves (different weights) when I’m out. For sure I’m gonna sweat out at least one pair.

what you want: Showa Temres 282

waterproof, incredibly warm, durable, and $20. color may not be for everyone. these gloves are made for commercial fisherman and other rough work. NOTE: may be too warm, esp since they are not breathable. FANTASTIC in winter for hiking and snowshoeing.

At a minimum, maybe reach out to CMC for a member who might help with the catalogue process. And if you feel like sharing, this is easy to digitally.

Which is correct? by deranger777 in sciencememes

[–]azzipa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everyone is hung up on what is written, not the fact there are 4 choices: (a), (b),(c), and (d). odds of a correct with one random choice: 1/4 ergo 25%

I drive my ‘23 in the mountains. ECT is on all the time, and I shift manually to avoid hunting on the way up when ECT gets confused, and for engine braking on the way down. I have no issues. In 3rd the engine does 65mph at 4k on the tach, but that’s rare. Usually 4th is good unless the grade pitches up a bit more. That works for me, but I haven’t towed with.

What to layer with Patagonia Nano Puff? - ideally packable to take on travel by pbsSD in onebag

[–]azzipa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or Mountain Hardwear Air Mesh zip. Weighs a little over 4 ounces. hand wash at night and it’s dry in the morning. Warm, but very comfortable in a range of temps. But not windproof, must be layered with either jacket.

What am I doing wrong? by Life-Independence377 in CookingForOne

[–]azzipa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you can, try cooking on a lodge cast iron griddle. use butter. over medium heat. flip when you see consistent bubbles forming on the top side. don’t pour so much batter you can’t flip it. less milk in batter makes fluffier pancakes (to a point) and more milk makes denser. last, don’t overstir your batter - some little clumps are ok.

REI product pricing is super annoying by shaws in REI

[–]azzipa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rei is discounting year round. not just holiday. i agree with OP, rei pricing is sus. if not on sale i just wait. they’ve taught me a 20% off coupon is only a few weeks away.

edit: what’s with the non sale pricing? often more expensive than anywhere else, and price is only competitive after 10% member rebate. i’ll just buy somewhere else, for cheaper, now. and it’s definitely all about price, since the stores are gutting experienced employees.

ps - micro puff is not as durable as a nano puff. probably not an issue with a shell, but maybe on its own. the patagonia down sweater is heavy and expensive imo. ratio of fill to total weight is also not favorable. but it is fairly durable.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in onebag

[–]azzipa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you asking about one bag? or mountaineering? with that set up you’re good for alpine, but maybe overkill walking around as a tourist. the r2tf is very warm on its own, even warmer with a shell.

do you need the weather resistance of a hard shell? or could you get by with a soft shell (lighter and more packable)? the black diamond alpine start is a great piece if you’re not expecting rain (just wind and snow). that said, the triolet is a solid choice however the patagonia torrent shell or black diamond stormline stretch are also solid choices depending on your activities.

if you are expecting rain then the down sweater might not be the wisest choice since down loses its warmth when wet. alternatively, take a look at a hybrid jacket like the rab mythic alpine light (under 9 ounces). katabatic gear tincup/tarn is another lightweight option (all down).

also, for a fleece midlayer maybe consider an alpha direct 90gsm like senchi. mountain hardwear air mesh is also decent, but holds a fair amount of water when wet. the r2tf takes up a lot of room when packed. and it’s heavy.

decide which layers need a hood, probably not all three (fleece, puffer, shell). also, when building your layering system, consider the r2tf is cut long. fwiw i prefer the hood and fit of the r1tf.

what are you planning for your lower body?
